It’s on DD’s neck. Age 10.

posting here for traffic. I have anxiety and am getting myself into a flap about it.

Yes because it looks inflamed and the borders are irregular. It's probably nothing and could be irritated or inflamed from being scratched or a chain catching on it, but best to get it checked then keep an eye on it.

Cantara · 16/03/2024 19:38

It looks like something has caught on it, but 100% get it checked as any change in a mole, or one that looks unusual, should should always be checked by a GP.

lurchersforever · 16/03/2024 19:41

I had a mole which I was convinced was sinister because of the photos on Google and the ABC test thing, but when I went to the GP she was totally unconcerned and tried to get it to fall off and then it did the next day in the shower. Just see a Dr because anyone else is just guessing. Hope it's all fine.

The mole itself looks ok, I have had a lot like that since childhood and asked the doctor about them. He passed images on to dermatology who said they were fine. However, the redness around it is unusual. Unless there is an obvious cause of the redness then I would get it checked.

Beamur · 16/03/2024 19:44

Kindly, only a professional can diagnose. But it's a bit red and an irregular shape so I would get it checked (I've just had a mole removed myself). Referral and treatment has been very speedy.

I will call the GP on Monday. She came over telling me it was itchy and this is how it looked. I thought maybe she had scratched the area, which may have caused the redness around it. On the other hand, it could have already been red before she scratched it. I’m just feeling very worried!

You should always get unusual moles or moles that have changed checked by a doctor BUT to put your mind at rest until you can see a GP, paediatric melanoma is very very rare and they don’t usually fit the ABCDE criteria. Most cases of melanoma found in children of your DD’s age are nodular or Spitzoid - unpigmented, pink or red, round, regular, bumps/lumps. I would say it is more likely that you will win the lottery tonight than your DD’s mole being cancerous. You must get it checked out ASAP but I really wouldn’t worry about it.

Just wondered if you had an update? My DS aged 12 has something similar that he's been itching and aggravated today. I also have anxiety and getting myself worked up about it.

smithsinarazz · 06/10/2024 22:24

My family have got a history of skin cancer, which means a) yes, I'd get it checked out asap b) I'd actually be only a bit upset if it did turn out to be cancerous. It's pretty treatable these days, the earlier you get it the better. It IS absolutely horrible worrying about something like this, though - been there. I really sympathise. Hope it's all ok. Xx
