Unacceptable for 11 and 12 year old children

I made spaghetti bolognese and was met with this when I went to wash the dishes.

Do you think this is acceptable from 11 and 12 year olds?

I'll start, absolutely fucking not.

Acceptable? No. Normal? Yes. Feeling your pain OP. How many times do we have to say it?!

Natsku · 15/03/2024 13:45

I'd make them take turns to do the washing up now. They'll soon learn not to do that.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/03/2024 13:45

Make washing the dishes their chore. They will be quick to make sure the plates are scraped first when they have to wash them.

SummerInSun · 15/03/2024 13:52

My ten year old says the bin is disgusting and he won't open it to scrape a plate if he can possibly avoid it!

Splatter1980 · 15/03/2024 13:55

Even the threat of scooping it up and depositing it in their beds hasn't deterred them 😂

Mine take it in turns to do the dishes, it prevents issues like this 🤣

K0OLA1D · 15/03/2024 13:57

I'd have hit the roof. I'm really struggling at the moment with my 10 and 12 yo DSs. They literally treat the house like a pig sty. I make them come downstairs to pick packets up off the floor or shoved down the side of the sofa. I make them come upstairs when they leave dirty clothes lying about the place. Nothing changes them. Bone idle. I am fed up of being a constant nag. 😒

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/03/2024 13:57

What chores do they have?

daffodilandtulip · 15/03/2024 13:59

Get a dog who likes scraps. The kids think it's fun to scrape it into her bowl 😂

mbosnz · 15/03/2024 13:59

Acceptable? No. I'm assuming they have been taught how to scrape, rinse, and stack, and if need be, wash and dry.

They would therefore be getting an intensive refresher tutorial, and then solid practice every night until I was satisfied it had sunk in.

(Apparently my intensive refresher tutorials for such things were a punishment in and of themselves, because when similarly provoked I get really rather sarky in the accompanying commentary. . .)

Obeast · 15/03/2024 14:00

Does that not just mean they'll be doing the dishes every day? Surely you didn't wash up after them?

Rickrolypoly · 15/03/2024 14:01

Depends really on what the normal expectation is of them. Do you typically make them wash up/put things in dishwasher or would they normally just pop the dishes in the sink? If they normally clean up and are just chancing their arm because you weren't there then I would be annoyed but if they don't, then what do you expect really?

Mine have learned the hard way on the wrappers thing. I now don’t buy snacks because I’m so sick of the wrappers not being binned and left under sofa cushions etc.

MrsKintner · 15/03/2024 14:02

Leave them to wash up.

You could legitimately put the plates on their beds.

This has never happened in our kitchen as we have zero tolerance for this stuff and things have to be cleaned asap. But they did leave stuff in their rooms as teens and I was clear they could not go out until everything was downstairs and in the dishwasher.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 15/03/2024 14:04

Please don't tell me you washed that up?

I've banned popcorn and pistachio nuts. I do blow my top sometimes and I am just met with grunts and eye rolls. I swear I wasn't such a messy git

@Splatter1980 i mean if you make it into a joke they might not think you are serious.

This would be unacceptable here and my kids are younger

It's not normal unless you accept it surely

Do it.

They will be utterly gobsmacked that you have actually carried out the threat.

<I'd wait until their beds need changing anyway though>

My ten year old says the bin is disgusting and he won't open it to scrape a plate if he can possibly avoid it!

This is because he never has to deal with a disgusting sink full of soggy spaghetti.

Allfur · 15/03/2024 16:13

In the big scheme of things, it's not something that I would get that upset about

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 15/03/2024 16:14

No its not acceptable, but no I am not at all surprised.

Noseybookworm · 15/03/2024 17:54

I think 11 and 12 is old enough to do the dishes themselves! Especially if you've cooked dinner for them!

hoonicorn · 15/03/2024 18:15

My 10yo just scraped his leftovers into the bin, we also had spag Bol. Yes unnacceptable. The difference may be that dishes are one of his chores for pocket money so he knows if he left it like that it's him who's dealing with it 🤣
