AIBU to expect the USA, with a population of 320 million, to come up with better candidates than Trump and Biden?

Yet another very unsubtle line from the right fringe.

I’m not right wing. I just think the most powerful nation in the world should be ran by someone who isn’t showing signs of decreasing mental capacities, that has nothing to do with which way politically I am

BronwenTheBrave · 15/03/2024 14:51

RickyB · 15/03/2024 12:42

In my opinion... Biden is simply a puppet that is controlled by higher powers (banks, WEF etc.). Trump is a vote against the higher powers, or 'deep state' or 'swamp' as he calls it.
Basically, the western financial system is reaching the end of its life and Trump is popular because he wants to oversee the revolution.

Hahahahaha! Trump wants to overthrow the vested financial interests? Him and Karl Marx?

CremeEggThief · 15/03/2024 14:51

Well it's not simplistic as you have put it in your OP, so I think YABU for that.

There are many, many reasons {that people with a much better understanding of US political systems than I have} that have led to Trump and Biden being the preferred candidates for selection. It didn't have overnight or in isolation.

GoosieLucie · 15/03/2024 14:51

TheSnowyOwl · 15/03/2024 12:22

It’s absolutely inexplicable.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is totally inexplicable. Money talks - and you need a hell of a lot of it in order to become the president.

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 15/03/2024 14:51

Biden wouldn't be my first choice for President, or even my hundred and first, but he's not a twat and not remotely comparable to Trump. Getting the Inflation Reduction Act passed was a work of political genius under the circumstances.

Okayornot · 15/03/2024 14:52

I think it probably works great from at least one perspective to have a leader who is either so incapacitated (Biden) or so corrupt (Trump) he can be made to do what you want. This is how unelected people get to pull the strings.

So why are you suggesting that a man who's old but clearly perfectly competent for everyday living should be in a care home? Did you watch the State of the Union address, and Biden working the floor afterwards?

I personally wouldn't hire an eighty one year old for a four year contract, but there's a difference between that and saying that he's currently incapable of independent life.

It was an exaggeration on my part, but I don’t think he’s mentally fit to be in office. Is that better?

listsandbudgets · 15/03/2024 15:05

Anyone fancy setting up a political party - Just Let Mums Do It - I reckon between us we could fit in fixing the country in between school runs, work, making random costumes, cooking, cleaning, acting as PAs and chauffeurs to our children, supervising homework, being walking encyclopaedias, shopping budgeting and a myriad of other things... running the country can't be much harder surely and might even be a welcome relief from random last minute craft projects

YANBU OP it's an appalling choice and I feel sad that America has nothing better to offer

lovelysoap · 15/03/2024 15:29

Its ridiculous OP. There were serious questions about Biden's mental faculties when he ran the first time around, he is now clearly in the grip of dementia. Trump is at best so divisive as to not be a suitable candidate. They are both far too old.

Tiredalwaystired · 15/03/2024 16:12

Ifailed · 15/03/2024 12:26

Yeah, cos our past 5 PMs have been brilliant, haven't they?

Remind me how many of those were actually elected by the wider public again..?

TinnitusEar · 15/03/2024 16:23

mathanxiety · 15/03/2024 14:29

Be honest now - that's not actually your opinion.

Like all the rest of the anti-Biden threads we've seen recently here (some like this one are thinly disguised by a reference to Trump) the opinions are not original, and the source is easy to track down.

All the references to puppetry (on another thread it was 'propping up') and unseen hands/ higher powers controlling politics come straight from Q Anon and other shite stirring sites.

I'd prefer Biden to Trump..... actually.

Bit like preferring Peter Sutcliffe to Jack the Ripper though

Seriously? Supreme Court Justice Ginsberg said in 1989 Roe V Wade is bad law and going to be over turned and Dems should fix the law before it is - but no one did. Don't blame Trump.
Trump got Nato members to agree to honor commitments which until then ONLY UK did.

Trump singlehandedly and without Congress got China to agree to cut trade deficit $500 billion per year! Trump got off shore corporate profits returned to US for investment at home totaling over $800 billion. Trump got everyone to start paying attention to China and global aspirations. Trump got first real wage increases since 1989. Trump got covid vaccines developed in record time, etc!

The Supreme Court nominees—every single one of them—said Roe was precedent in their Senate hearings. They were sworn in on this basis. They lied.

Trump DGAF about NATO. If you’ll recall, in recent weeks he’s goaded Putin to attack NATO members who are under 2% of GDP. Trump clearly wants to dismantle the NATO alliance.

Anyway, you’re clearly a MAGA, so I’ll politely exit here.

potato57 · 15/03/2024 16:38

Need to vote based on who the vice presidents will be, since the actual presidents will be incapable. I'd vote Kamala Harris for president any day of the week.

You're clearly a debil, I just said use facts not bias. Trump isn't my guy but he did do a lot of good for the USA and IMHO Biden is no longer capable of executing the office.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/03/2024 16:42

I wonder who is really pulling the strings in the USA - is there something else at play here? Not a fan of conspiracy theories, but I can't believe this is the only two people in the entire country that can run!

Golden407 · 15/03/2024 16:42

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/03/2024 13:20

They'd rather have old white men than highly qualified woman. So it's not really a population of 300+ million to choose from.

Which "highly qualified" woman are you thinking of?

StedeBonnet · 15/03/2024 16:48

I was also disappointed at Biden being selected as it means Trump is going to win. I stayed up all night to watch him lose last time, can hardly believe this is the situation. It's totally outrageous really after everything.

StedeBonnet · 15/03/2024 16:52

Biden could lose all capacity and still be a safe option than Trump on full capacity (although that is debatable.)

Overtheatlantic · 15/03/2024 16:55

Biden isn’t a twat. And Trump is more than a twat he’s an evil criminal.

WaterWeasel · 15/03/2024 16:56

Sandsnake · 15/03/2024 12:31

Joe’s too old and not the best man for the job but he’s not a twat.

He most certainly is.

WaterWeasel · 15/03/2024 16:57

SevenSeasOfRhye · 15/03/2024 12:27

I don't think we're in a position to throw stones with our glass house of Sunak, Starmer, Johnson, Truss, Corbyn ....

Excellent point.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 15/03/2024 16:58

Back when the constitution was written life expectancy wasn't as high as it is now, and they only stipulated a minimum age to be president (35) and no maximum. I can't see that being amended however because it's exactly the older generation who are in charge now.

stuckdownahole · 15/03/2024 17:04

It's quite depressing when you remember that the last-but-two president was Obama, who rose from nowhere solely because of his own abilities and charisma. He won his first election against John McCain who was widely respected for his gruff honesty and exceptional military record. That was only 2008, but it feels so long ago it may as well have been 1950.

The last two elections have been Trump, a rich braggart who made none of his own money, against has-been politicians from the Obama era. It's like turning on the football to find that Gary Lineker is still captain of England at the age of 60 and he's playing against Elon Musk who is using his wealth to cheat and have extra players on his team. Depressing.
