To be racked with guilt

(somewhat light hearted)
Accidently knocked over a jar of sun dried tomato's in the shop, they smashed but wasn't a huge mess. I waited by them for a few minutes until I saw a member of staff when none came I decided to go and find somebody to no avail as all staff I saw were on the tills. Walked back to the scene of the crime and it had been cleaned so I payed for my items and scarpered.
Anyway, for some reason I feel mega guilty that I didn't offer to pay or tell anybody and now I have images of being barred from the shop over sun dried tomatoes. I also feel guilty because it could have hurt somebody which im assuming it didn't.

That sounds like something I would have done. Try not to worry. You tried to look for someone and its done now. Plenty of people would have just walked away, as that's the society we live in now!

I’ve worked in supermarkets. It happens regularly, I’ve never known a customer made to pay for this kind of breakage, so don’t worry!

I dropped a jar of coffee the other day. Apologised and the cashier rang for someone to clean it up. No expectation of me paying. Though a bonkers bloke muttered on he could have been hurt... He wasn't even at the checkout at that point. He proceeded to pick up bits of glass... I asked him if he didn't want to be hurt why was he touching broken glass....?

I wouldn’t worry. You tried. It got cleaned up. No harm.

My young son once dropped a thing of cupcakes and made a mess in the bakery aisle, we apologised to the store worker nearby and she said it’s not a problem, mess can be cleaned, etc, and then she added she’s seen way worse behaviour from adults - apparently some people eat half the cakes and put them back on the shelf😱

Don’t worry about it. It was an accident and they are not bothered by it - it happens all the time. I once walked around Tescos oblivious to a long trail of milk coming from the leaking carton in my basket.

When I worked in a supermarket, if you'd dropped them in the carpark I'd have got it cleaned up and automatically got you a replacement

Oh God. There are people like that wherever you go. Since I had my five month old, I'm a nervous wreck. This seems to attract the nutters even more!
