Antidepressant prescribing

I can’t believe I’m even doing this, it’s something I’ve needed to do for a long time but I’ve been in denial a bit

I’m going to book an appointment online with a company called DocTap regarding my mental health. However, it says they cannot prescribe potentially addictive medications on a virtual appointment… does that cover most antidepressants or anxiety medications? I’m keen to try something to feel better , but I can’t make it in person and I don’t want to book an appointment if it turns out they can’t even prescribe anything. Has anyone got any experience in this?

TIA x

Why aren't you booking to speak with a GP?

RunningAwayToJoinTheCircus · 14/03/2024 22:35

They probably mean painkillers/opiates but you won't know unless you check. It would probably mean outright tranquilisers or sleeping pills too, but modern ADs have moved on from "mother's little helper".
Do they have any guidelines on the website or anywhere?

From the picture it looks like that means they can't prescribe medication like methadone which is drug replacement therapy, which makes sense as that needs to be monitored closely.

Sounds like they'll be able to prescribe antidepressants/anti anxiety meds.

It’s near on impossible to get an appointment with work etc, I’m happy just to pay privately to do it at a time that suits me best rather than go through the nightmare that is booking a GP appointment

This is such a classic MN first reply to a post lol

Great, that’s what I was thinking too but just wasn’t sure

I don’t actually want any medications that would potentially be addictive, just to be clear lol, I just want to try whatever the lowest entry level sort of antidepressant I could possibly try to see if it helps. I definitely don’t want to try anything strong or potentially addictive etc!

Fair do's 😀

I would imagine they mean things like diazepam/temezepam, that sort of things. Whilst some anti depressants are addictive in the sense once you have been on them for a while you have to wean yourself off them otherwise you get withdrawal symptoms, they aren't considered addictive in the same sense as drugs like addictive painkillers, heroin etc.
