Blonde ambition is still alive today

Just that really. I was having an interesting conversation with my friends who I've known since school. We are now mid 30s. Without fail, all the women we knew from school, whether they were brunette, red, blonde have dyed their hair lighter and have become blonde.

There is so much celebration of diversity and marketing demonstrating beauty of all hues, however it seems that in the Western world, there is still some cachet and preference to being blonde. And this is why so many women bleach/highlight their hair.

I'd go as far as saying that even in the workplace and in general interactions, people perceive blonde as 'more attractive ' and you are treated better as a consequence. I've certainly noticed this when abroad, and my blonde friends get more attention.

AIBU to suggest society still has a bit of a blonde/blue eyed obsession?

I am blue eyed with long, naturally blonde hair.
If anything, I think this old-fashioned preference has dwindled over the years.
I think people are more fixated on body, than hair and eye colour.

zendeveloper · 14/03/2024 21:25

I did it because it looks much more forgiving alongside grey hair (not fully blonde, but balayage).

Flossyflop · 14/03/2024 21:29

A lot of women go lighter in their 30s and 40s to hide grey better.

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 14/03/2024 21:31

It hides grey

overthinkersanonnymus · 14/03/2024 21:31

I'm 37 with a naturally dark (bloody gorgeous) hair.

I've recently developed an allergy to PPD, so I can't have the few grays I get covered anymore. My only option to have baby lights and I'm gutted.

I love having dark hair 😩

Temporaryanonymity · 14/03/2024 21:34

yep, as others have said, it hides the grey better

LovelyTheresa · 14/03/2024 21:35

This is nonsense, OP. If anything I would say that the world sees darker hair as more attractive now. Even Leonardo DiCaprio has moved from blondes to brunettes (still 25 and under though lol!)

THisbackwithavengeance · 14/03/2024 21:37

I would've agreed with you 10 - 20 years ago; blonde hair was rare and coveted.

Now many women are blonde and let's face it most older women are blonde because it hides grey.

So it's much less special than it was

I agree with you. I have long naturally very blonde hair and green eyes. I don't think it's really anything special although natural blondes do seem to be quite rare.
I love all hair colours but do think that natural hair usually looks better on most people.

ThreeTreeHill · 14/03/2024 21:40

I think it just hide greys better, and also its an easy change to make to get highlights, shove some bleach on. And it's easier to go darker if you bleach your hair than go lighter if you put red/black on so its a less 'permanent' decision.

I know plenty of people who die their hair a range of colours, dark, ginger etc. Everyone going blonde is not my reality

Branleuse · 14/03/2024 21:44

I'm late 40s and have gone blonde in the last year because it isn't as harsh when the grey roots come in. I was having to do my roots every 3 weeks when I was brunette. Now I just do it here and there.
I think it's a softer look too

BlueMum16 · 14/03/2024 21:44

I work in a team of 15. 4 reds, only one blonde, the rest brunette. Definitely not a thingy here unless older and trying to hide grey.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 14/03/2024 21:48

This doesn’t tally with what I see in real life. I think people notice body and face more now, hence the BBL trend and endless make up tutorials, focus on skincare and Botox.

Gone are the days when a below average in the face woman could just have a mop of blond hair, call it a day and be considered hot. People will notice the difference between Samantha Brick and Michelle Keegan now for example. The definition of attractive has become more holistic than just hair.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 14/03/2024 22:02

I think only a handful of my friends die their hair blonde, maybe 3 or so 🤔

People never thought that Samantha Brick was hot. She was deluding herself.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 14/03/2024 22:08

My natural colour now is about half darkish brown, half grey. I’m 50 & I’ve been getting grey hairs since I was 30ish.

I mess around with semi permanent colours in dark shades sometimes but if there’s one thing I’m never going to do, it’s the going blonde to hide the grey.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/03/2024 22:08

I think blonde works well to cover grey. If you were blonde as a child I think it kind of suits better than if you're naturally darker. But yeah, I do prefer being blonde personally. I'm natural right now and feel with blonde people treat me nicer lol.

Crazycatlady79 · 14/03/2024 22:13

I've been so many different hair colours in life (including purple, pink and green at different times!).
I honestly prefer my hair dark brown (dyed), but it really doesn't suit my complexion (nor has it ever).
My natural colour is mousey brown, with with a lot of grey, which doesn't bother me at all, as been going steadily grey since I was 16! BUT, I do like a few highlights and lowlights.
I swear there's more brunettes about in my town than blondes dyed, or otherwise). 🤔

I also love dark hair, and would far rather have it than my 'used to be blonde as a kid, now a nondescript colour' hair. I actually celebrate it turning a more light browny colour. My mother was blonder as a child than I was, but had proper brown hair by the time I was born - I'm still waiting!

bradpittsbathwater · 14/03/2024 22:17

I know more brunettes than blondes. I have dark blonde/mousy hair and have highlights. It suits my colouring. I don't feel any more or less special than the next woman

Smidge001 · 14/03/2024 22:19

As others have said - it hides the grey

Fomp · 14/03/2024 22:21

I have dark hair with some blonde highlights that hide my greys. Im 35

SkaneTos · 14/03/2024 22:21

I am a natural blonde. I do not get more attention.
I look really dull.

Garlicnaan · 14/03/2024 22:38

I don't agree, but lots of women go lighter because it's more flattering on their complexion - especially if their natural colour is mousey.

Lighter hair is more youthful typically, so women as they get older may gravitate towards it.

In my workplace I'm the only blonde haired female! Out of 20 people, mostly in 20s and 30s. Three or four get blonde-ish balayage but it's still mostly brown. Maybe it's to do with where you live and your demographic too.
