Family Facebook drama

Had a spat with mil over not seeing enough of my kids photos on FB. I told mil I'm stressed as I have shit going on ( didn't say what, but her grandchild will likely be expelled tomorrow).

Mil retorted that at least I'm not watching my child die of cancer so my worries therefore are irrelevant. Referring to a young family member with stage 4 cancer.

I have been told that this family member is fighting, hopefully has many years ahead, etc. Now she has told me she is dieing as a retort to a spat?

One, it's not a great way to find out this is the end for this family member.
Two, there's always something worse for everyone. At least my child doesn't have cancer and dieing from it - true, but at least we are not living in Gaza and dieing of cancer, least we are not dead yet. If we was all killed in a car crash someone would still had a worse time somewhere. That's just a fact. It doesn't negate my problems. Or should I say a breezyly to the senco in tomorrow's meeting "at least he's healthy!"

I can't ever get out if being the bad guy. Yes I've told dh, yes he has had a word with her, she didn't listen to him. Him sending her photos directly was suggested. That didn't cut it. She needs to see all the photos. ( that she is getting anyway via multiple relatives as she told dh that). She has to have access to my FB.

So, set the guns on me as this is AIBU. I guess IABU. Whatever nightmare dil I am, I think that retort was nasty

Block her and tell her to ask your DH to send photos!

Iv had this nonsense.. It gets really boring. I now don't post any of my business on Facebook.. Christmas, holidays, days out, nothing...

Grey rock now - no information about anything, don't go anywhere or do anything etc..

It still causes drama but not anywhere near as much. The other family members can't be gossiping "how can they afford that" "are they on holiday again" "oh look at her hair!"

It's all too much. I sympathise completely

DyddDewiSant · 14/03/2024 17:28

Don't engage with her. Block and let DH pass her photos

PassingStranger · 14/03/2024 17:47

You don't have to put your children on Facebook, you don't even have to be on it to start with.
There are other ways now to share pics without fb.

Get rid of Facebook and put an end to this nonsense once and for all. Tell your mother-in-law she can badger her son for pictures.

Honestly I would deactivate Facebook and put an end to it. Or if you like Facebook too much stop putting your DCs photos on there full stop. Everyone wants access to people 24/7 these days.
Your MIL was awful to use someone suffering with cancer as leverage against you and to minimise your problems. Your MIL sounds like she doesn’t really care about anyone apart from herself.
