I wish to join ancestry (the one that you send a dna sample off) I'm sorry I don't know what it is called. I suffer from health anxiety and I am concerned that it will give me information about any health issues I may be predisposed to. Could anyone help me please x

I joined ancestry recently with a dna test and all it told me about traits were stupid things like whether I was sensitive to certain tastes and my chance of having a cleft chin.
Maybe I am not using their (confusing) app properly but I found it underwhelming and wouldn’t have bothered had I known how crap it was.

LIZS · 14/03/2024 15:05

I don't think the ancestry dna does more than give you ethnicity and links to potential relatives also registered.

meeplepeople · 14/03/2024 15:06

It will not give you any health information. That's an optional extra.

Enjoy your genealogy journey!

ExtraOnions · 14/03/2024 15:07

My Ancestry DNA just told me ethnicity, and possible relatives

PeacockHat · 14/03/2024 15:11

I had my DNA tested with Ancestry years ago. It gives ethnicity and you can see people you are genetically related to.

As @Blackcats7 correctly says, you can look at traits you're likely to have. It's things like how likely you are to like the taste of coriander or gave a fear of heights. It won't give you any health information.

Thank you this is very reassuring. Which test did people order as there is a choice of three

Been doing it for several years is a great hobby for the winter months. It tells you who your close and distant relatives are. And from that you build your family tree.

Does not give health information.

I was able to figure out. Who my grandad was and what happened to him (was a family secret)

have made links with lots of cousins in America i never knew i had, and am in touch with them all.

jackandy · 15/03/2024 03:15

You need the normal Ancestry DNA test. No health traits. Just the normal one

PeloMom · 15/03/2024 03:18

23 and me gives health predisposition

lala567 · 15/03/2024 06:26

Hi. I'm really sorry to jump on. I've wanted to do a test.

Would it be able to match my great grandad (my mums, mums dad) and his other children?

Would the results be better if my mum took the test? She isn't interested.

LIZS · 15/03/2024 08:23

Assuming they are registered, majority of population won't be.

LadyEloise1 · 15/03/2024 08:52

I think 23andme is the "DNA" company that gives you information on health as @PeloMom says.

Ancestry is more pure genealogy based.

Hi lala

Yes if you took a test, you would match to anyone descended from your great grandfather (assuming they have taken a test).

Shared great grandparents in your generation are second cousins and you will always share DNA with a full second cousin.

Ancestry do give you an estimate of the relationship with a match, it's not always totally accurate but will give you an idea. Best to check the shared matches to see where you fit in.

Given you want to check your great grandfathers matches, your mum wouldn't need to take a test, only if you wanted to search for cousins more distantly related would it be helpful.

Hope that helps! Smile
