AIBU hoovering at midnight with windows open

I have 3 large dogs and 2 cordless hoovers (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs). The only way I can keep my house tidy is that if I spot a fluffball/a pile of crumbs from dog treats I do a very quick hoover.

I’m Im also going through the menopause so always have windows open. Last night I was hoovering a mess (machine can’t have been on for more than 30 seconds) when it suddenly dawned on me how anti social my behaviour could be interpreted as- hoovering at midnight with my window open.

We live in a cul de sac (google has given an image which represents our road).

Am I overthinking this or is this a bit of lapse of judgement?

I’m not sure if neighbours can hear - houses are fairly well spaced apart. Not like modern housing estates. If I knew neighbours could hear, of course I would not hoover and knowingly disturb them.

Personally I would sweep it in the evening then hoover up on the day time. Uk Law would recommend not after 11pm. See screenshot. If your neighbours don't complain don't worry 😉

Overthinking.

Identical situation here - cul de sac, menopause, furball etc. At midnight last night I was chatting with ds while he was doing the dishes, when I got the vac out. I vacuumed for about 5 minutes. Ds and I continued chatting at normal conversational level throughout, so I doubt I was making much noise.

Unless you've got a roaringly loud vac, I wouldn't give it another thought.

LakieLady · 14/03/2024 07:24

I wouldn't have done it, but I don't know how loud your hoover is.

We have 2 shark cordless machines.

I wouldn't even think twice. It's just a quick hoover. I've smashed a glass late at night and hoovered up.

Hoglet70 · 14/03/2024 07:31

I can hear next door's hoover but if you aren't attached to your neighbours I don't see the problem.

Unabletomitigate · 14/03/2024 09:03

Hey!
A small lapse of judgement. Don't beat yourself up about it.
If you think it is anti-social don't do it again :)

You’re way too thoughtful OP! I have a very fluffy cat and I regularly whack the hoover out at 12am!

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 14/03/2024 09:21

If no one has complained and your house is as in pic, then there is no problems unless you have one of those old hoovers that sound like a jet plane

MessyNeate · 14/03/2024 09:31

I live in a similar set up, cul de sac, detached house. Often my sleep is terrible so I will be awake at 4am doing housework, including hoovering/washing machine.

Also menopausal so windows will be open, my neighbours haven't said anything! Presuming they can't hear!

SunsetFire · 14/03/2024 09:37

We live in a detached, but have hoovered at all hours, but I would close the windows.

TheFlis · 14/03/2024 09:40

Get a robot hoover!! We have one and it’s a game changer when you have a dog. It’s incredibly quiet and just bimbles around doing its thing whenever you tell it to.

INeedAnotherName · 14/03/2024 09:44

Try asking your neighbours if they can hear it and if it bothers them. Remember that sound can amplify and carry further when the air is damp so you could be affecting the whole close. You don't have to go knocking, just ask the next time you see them.
