To blow dry my hair at 9pm in a terrace house?

I recently moved and my bedroom shares a wall with my neighbour's child's bedroom (I think they're around 6 or 7). The sound proofing isn't great, I can hear them talking but not make out what they're saying if that makes sense. I always wash my hair at night and tend to blow dry it at around 8:30pm-9:30pm. Is that acceptable? I will of course try and do it earlier but sometimes it's not possible. I'm hoping that the sound of a hair dryer is like white noise so won't disrupt their sleep?

Yes of course

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/03/2024 21:25

Dry it downstairs, if you are worried,

Shiningout · 13/03/2024 21:25

Sorry meaning yes of course it's okay

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2024 21:26

That's so nice of you to care.

It wouldn't worry me. And just chat and say hi to them if you can so that they can say if there are any issues.

TruthorDie · 13/03/2024 21:26

It’s fine

Autienotnaughtie · 13/03/2024 21:26

I'd dry it downstairs as it might disturb the child.

ScarletILumination · 13/03/2024 21:26

Drying hair is a reasonable activity and 9pm is not an unsocial time.

Seems fine to me.

Alwaystired2023 · 13/03/2024 21:27

I think it's okay, I blow dry my hair in the bedroom next to my child's room and they don't wake - I think like you said it's like white noise?

puzzledout · 13/03/2024 21:27

It's fine

icelollycraving · 13/03/2024 21:28

I think it’s ok but if you see them, mention it or do it in a different room.

bringmorewashing · 13/03/2024 21:30

It's nice that you're such a considerate neighbour! I'm sure it's fine, even if they can hear it a hairdryer is kind of like white noise, it's not as if you're playing loud music.

neverbeenskiing · 13/03/2024 21:30

I'm of the opinion that people have a right to do activities that generate normal household noise (hair drying, hoovering, washing machine) when and where it's convenient for them. Things like loud music, parties or noisy building work are another matter but I really don't think you should feel bad about drying your hair in your own bedroom.

Catsandcuddles · 13/03/2024 21:30

I did mine about 9.45 pm last night, I don't think it's too late either, some people work shifts. My son is in the room next door it never wakes him up. It's nice of you to think about them though

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/03/2024 21:32

It's completely fine. You'll hear each others noise. It's the joy of being attached to someone!

SpringSprungALeak · 13/03/2024 21:33

If the child wakes up because of your hairdryer (they won't), the parents would have to sit in complete silence. It's light background noise. Dont give it another thought!

NotCute · 13/03/2024 21:35

Won't even hear you in a period property.

Even if its a new build its hardly offensive so crack on.

niadainud · 13/03/2024 21:38

From your OP it doesn't sound like your neighbours have even said they can hear you drying your hair, so I'm not quite sure why you're worrying about it. But you could easily move the hairdryer to a different room if you want to be extra considerate.

Redglitter · 13/03/2024 21:39

I'd be amazed if they can hear your hairdryer from their house

Zingy123 · 13/03/2024 21:41

It's quite loud. My old neighbour used to dry theirs at 6am every week day. It used to wake me up.

IntermittentFarting · 13/03/2024 21:46

You're more thoughtful than most OP!
Perhaps start the drying on the lowest setting and then build up, so there's not a sudden, abrupt noise!

Agreed. Both my kids are asleep at that time but a faint hairdryer noise through a wall wouldn't wake them. And even if it did, sadly that would be my problem in this case, not yours.

PlumbersWifey · 13/03/2024 23:06

Crack on it's fine.
