I just applied for a new job . And I've been offered the job.

I sent in my references and they checked out.

They are now still doing due diligence on me.

I provided accurate dates for my most recent employment.

I'm 40

When I applied for the role , I put every job since I left college on my CV.

For the older jobs: jobs that were 10 + years ago, I put the years that I worked down.

For example I wrote:

I worked in this role, in this company, from 2012-2014.

HR for my new job have now come back to me and said that they want me to put the starting month and finishing month down for each job. That just stating the year is not good enough for them.

I genuinely don't remember anymore. I probably knew the month at one stage. But in my saved copies of my cv , i just have the year saved. I don't have saved contracts or job details from the older jobs. People that worked with me don't work there anymore.

I'm stressed because- they're a really strict company and they really do their due diligence.

I dont know what to do.

They dont seem that flexible of a company. Im afraid to say that I don't remember. In case it makes me lose my job

What's the best thing to do?

For example I put

I worked in this job from 2012 to 2014.

But they want the month aswell.

So they want from January 2012 to January 2014.

I have the months for my more recent jobs.

But not for the really old ones

And they want it for every job

Are you in the UK? If so, check with HMRC.

pleasecallmeback · 13/03/2024 17:31

I had something similar to this when I applied for a job in the financial sector. I think it's to make sure you haven't been in prison. Can you remember roughly when you started and finished each job? Any gaps in employment history make them suspicious.

Scaffoldingisugly · 13/03/2024 17:32

Check online banking for pay dates...

No I grew up in ROI
And ive worked in 3 different countries
One older job was in the UK. I can check HMRC for that.
Some older jobs were in ROI.
Some older jobs were in Spain.

I was coming on to suggest asking HMRC but @LouLaBear23 beat me to it. If you have an online HMRC I think you can go right back through your eployment history on that, otherwise their live chat should be able to help, it's active until 8pm if I remember right.

Mummame222 · 13/03/2024 17:33

Seems a bit OTT and invasive.

I can remember roughly.

I know I started one job near the end of the year, eg.
It was either in Oct, Nov or

If you think they will check with the companies concerned then ask the companies for the dates, otherwise just make them up?

Thanks so much for the advice.

But I don't have the same bank account as I did back then.

I moved bank last year. I had to as ulster bank closed in ireland

If they want check if you're a criminal they can DBS. It seems like more a formality. Can you just put rough guesses? If it's from 10 plus years back it's seems a bit mad that they'd check the precise dates. Then put approx next to it.
If they don't hire you based on that it sounds bizarre. Surely it's the last 2-3 jobs they'd be checking with. If you do have gaps on employment just be open about them, in case they do want check you aren't in prison!?

Frozenasarock · 13/03/2024 17:39

It’s fairly common, I’ve had jobs wanting every job I’ve ever had, going back to A levels, plus addresses with dates. On the one hand I understand why in some fields, on the other hand it’s ridiculous because unless possibly I was applying for MI5 how on earth is an ordinary employer going to verify or not whether I really lived in a now demolished student residence more than twenty years ago, so what’s the point in asking!

If we’re talking information from over a decade ago that no one’s going to check or prove I’d give my best guesstimate if I couldn’t work it out from my emails, photos, old bank statements etc.

Can you not get it from the revenue website? I had a similar problem, can't remember if I got exact months. It's a bit ridiculous to expect that level of detail tbh

Jovacknockowitch · 13/03/2024 17:42

HMRC app doesn't show me ANY of my previous employers. It has NI figures going back to 1979 but not where I was employed - is anyone else seeing all their old employers?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/03/2024 17:43

Just email the employers and ask for dates.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 13/03/2024 17:51

I'd do some research with old emails etc but then do an educated guess and make sure there are no gaps. When you really think it through you might remember details, like the season or other personal details. For example I remember starting a job and being awkward about going to the Christmas party after only a week or two. I remember another where I needed a Fri off for my friends wedding on my first week and being nervous saying it when I got my job offer. I could pin down to within a few weeks if I really worked through it.

Allfur · 13/03/2024 17:52

What a palava, and how is it relevant? I'd just make it up

I'm in Ireland so it does show employers, assumed it'd be the same elsewhere, sorry.

Just email the employers and ask for dates.

They don't remember the dates either!

I'm actually still friendly with my boss from a job that i was in 12 years ago. We still talk online on Facebook.

I'm not using her as a reference now.

But one time a while ago, I asked her would she give me a reference. And she said

'yes no problem, but you'll have to remind me of the dates that you worked with me"

She can't remember.

I have contacted the HR dept of that company. There is only one HR /administrator for the compnay. They don't keep details from that long ago.

HMRC's record keeping is not that good and only goes back 6 years in most cases.

They've definitely been the job that has been the most strict on me. She said its company procedure

It's in a financial company. So that's probably why

But it's not like I'm working in high finance , it's a customer service role.

But yeah they've been so so strict in the job application process.

I've had three different HR people ring and email me this week looking for docs.

Go through your personal emails and see if they jog your memory?

Try to remember where you lived and when?

When you do send in dates, make sure you caveat with a "this is my best recollection, I may be out by a month here or there and if I am it's not intentional".

And fgs keep a record from now on!

Dacadactyl · 13/03/2024 18:08

I too would make it up for the really old ones.
