To keep going back to the doctors with my son?

For 15 days now, my DS17 has felt sick every morning. He has vomitted almost every day, mainly yellow bile or liquid. It's not his food he's bringing up. He has had loss of appetite every morning since January, but he perks up by about 11am. But for the last fortnight he has been vomiting every morning, feeling sick, feeling dizzy and just looking really pale. I took him to the gp, they said viral gastritis, did bloods which came back fine. A week later he was still ill but had started with some diarrhoea so I took him back and we saw a different gp. He said it was viral gastroenteritis and it would clear in a week. He asked him to do a stool sample, which subsequently came back normal. By the weekend, I was really worried as he was violently throwing up so we went to urgent care. After a 4 hour wait, we were seen and they basically did all the usual checks then told us to just follow up with the gp as it's not clear what's causing it.

He hasn't been sick for two days now but he is heavily dosing up on strong gaviscon and he says he still feels like he's always on the cusp on throwing up.

Aibu to go back again to the gp and ask them for a referral to gastroenterology? Does this sound like he may have an ulcer? What else would cause major nausea/vomiting every morning, but it not be as bad the rest of the day?

They've ruled out diabetes, blood pressure, infection, bowel issue. What else could it be??

If it was an ulcer he'd probably be experiencing a gnawing / burning pain. Has he had anything like this?

You say he's not been sick for two days, is he keeping food and liquid down now? And how is he in himself?

Food sensitivity/ allergy ruled out?
Norovirus ruled out? There's a lot of it about and it can last for weeks.
Has he taken any substances that you might not be aware of?
I'd get a referral or take him to A&E and get further tests until you get a diagnosis.

100% ask for a gastro referral. Do not accept anything else.
I work in gastroenterology and this would definitely be something we would have referred to us.
We had a 17yo lad in recently with very similar symptoms. He has EoE which was diagnosed on an OGD. It is becoming much more common especially in teen males. I'll add a link. Feeling like this for two weeks is not normal.
An initial consultation with a gastroenterologist should give you options in treatment and follow up. Any chance you could go private?

Don't cut out food groups (gluten etc) without having GP or medical referral first, as bloods need to be taken to ascertain levels before you cut out a group.

does he have breakfast?

Wishitsnows · 12/03/2024 11:27

Yes, take him back and ask for a referral so he can be properly investigated. It’s such a waste of everyone’s time when they say come back in a week and we’ll see. It just prolongs anything getting done. Hope they find the root cause soon and he starts getting better

Puppupandaway · 12/03/2024 12:19

Thanks everyone. He doesn't eat breakfast any more, he says he just doesn't feel like it with the stomach ache. He is keeping food down, and has done the last two days, but it's only thanks to copious amounts of gaviscon. They did test him for cealiac, that was ok. He has a stomach ache all day but the vomiting/nausea is always at its worst first thing in the morning.

@Boscoforever Thank you for the link. There's a chance it could be this. I will mention it to my gp when we go next week for our follow up. I'm going to push for a referral. Thank you.

Gosh this sounds awful. I would absolutely push for a referral. I would say I'm not leaving until a referral is made. Some GPs are so quick to should viral and act like a referral is literally coming out of their pocket. If you can go private I would, a consultant initial chat is around £400 I think then any investigations would be on top of that. NHS will take months.

Puppupandaway · 18/03/2024 18:07

Update: he's really improved in the last few days. He has stopped the gaviscon and is now eating more. He hasn't been sick for a week now. It's looking like it really was a nasty viral infection that's taken a while to shift. We have cancelled the gp appointment but will rebook if his symptoms start again. Thanks to everyone who gave advice.
