Child’s nosebleeds

Posting for traffic
my ds is 9 and has always suffered with awful nosebleeds. GP was supposed to refer him but I don’t think they have.
they’ve been awful the past week or so due to him having a bad cough.
has anyone got any advice on how to deal with them? His dad used to get them but grew out of it

I suffered terribly with them all through childhood, eventually had my nose cauterised in my teens and never had one since. Definitely push to see if a referral is in place.

One of mine had terrible nose bleeds. Worse in the summer
Sometimes huge clots of blood would stream out.

Hes nearly 20 now and hasn’t had one for a year or two.
Id definitely speak to the doctor but ours did nothing and just said he’d grow out of them.
If he has a bad one try to up his iron intake.

One of my closest friends also had terrible nosebleeds as a child. When she was about 13 or so she had her nose cauterised, and that stopped the bleeds.

My sister had awful nosebleeds as a child, right into adulthood. She had her nose cauterised multiple times as a child and it didn’t help, but then had it done once as an adult and hasn’t had a nosebleed since. As a PP suggested I would keep the iron intake up in the meantime.

DS 7 had an ENT referral for this and consultant said they don't recommend cauterisation anymore as it often doesn't help in kids that young. She recommended:

  • A cream to use when he gets one, for two weeks. We got bactroban due to but allergies in family but usually it's nasceptin
  • anti histamine to reduce inflammation
  • try to keep air moist so diffuser at night if he has a cold, and no hot baths before bed which swells blood vessels and makes them more likely to give way

One of mine suffered this until very recently.

We used to get these nose plug things from the chemist, worked really well at stopping the blood. Much better than tissues, like a sort of earplug for the nose.

He always refused to be cauterised and now aged 20, looks like it's finished without it.

Hope your DS isn't too upset when they happen and hopefully they will stop with time

I too had awful nosebleeds as a child, worse in the summer when hay fever kicked in.
all I could do was keep my head over a sink until it stopped.

i grew out of them about age 13.

Darkilluminatesstars · 12/03/2024 12:56

I had my nose cauterised around that age - definitely in primary school
Still had the odd little one (and still do) but nothing like the 45/60 min sessions I was having - it made an enormous difference.

Ps bit of a tangent but I also have some hypermobility issues and I’ve sometimes wondered if could have been be connected (weaker connective tissue etc).

My son gets them every few months and they seem to come on and off over a few days. I can’t remember the word the doctor used but basically because he doesn’t get them more regularly and they’re not so heavy they can’t do anything about them. At the start of every school year I have to warn the teacher although he’s well able to deal with them. Weirdly his brother and me generally get one a day or two after him!! I still remind my gp if he’s in for something else just in case. I’d say definitely remind. Best of luck op x

My eldest (now 16) had regular, bad nosebleeds. We had to mention it on his school medical file as they would come out of nowhere and last for ages. He will still occasionally get one if he's overheated, but it's only maybe 2-3 times a year now rather than several a week. His father had the same and it turned out to be something to do with the blood vessels in his nose bursting when swelling. Not dangerous or painful, just messy. I think it's fairly common in kids (and pregnant women as I found out with DS2), but they usually grow out of it
