If conspiracy theories serve a purpose, then what purpose is the current one about KM serving?

I was listening to a podcast about conspiracy theories and it would seem that the reason we enjoy them/ read them/ believe them is that they in some way support our beliefs or validate our fears.
Given the current discussion around Kate, that photo and the associated theories, I wondered what others felt.
Do we want to believe she is desperately unhappy, mentally unwell or sick?
Is this our way of ending the monarchy?
Do we have more awareness of the impact of celebrity and royalty on mental health? Is this a reflection of our own grief about the end of a system which is so emblematic, so integral to our country's identity?
Or do people get a kick out of rich people having secrets? Is this just punching up?

My colleague has conflated all the Catherine stuff with the cars going into gates at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle..apparently all linked...🤔🤪

Since when has Katherine looked like she has an eating disorder? She looks healthy to me. Are people getting her confused with Diana? Most of the theories are totally off the scale!

She has Russell’s sign on her knuckles (notice that in photos she’s often wearing plasters on her fingers) and swollen parotid glands. I’d be astonished if she’s not bulimic.

Source - I was bulimic as a teenager. I feel deeply sorry for her, it’s a hellish illness.

Keep mumsnet forums full and they get their advertising revenue.

CranfordScones · 12/03/2024 12:03

Just as with other theories, it demonstrate a person's sense of their own unique insight in to the world and feeds an innate sense of superiority over others who 'just believe what they want you to believe'.

So it's all about the people who propound the theories, not the theories themselves.

TastyTakoyaki · 12/03/2024 12:04

I have no idea about Kate’s personal health, nor should I, but I did meet her once, she came to visit my work as part of her interest in Early Years. She was skin and bone, but some people can be like that. I wouldn’t assume or put it out on the internet that she has an ED because I simply don’t know that.

Conspiracy theories often have one nugget of truth, so people get sucked in and look for other points that could validate their hypothesis. There is a heady concoction of desire to know all the information but also fun of a mystery. Conspiracy theories will exist as long as humans do. Sometimes I do believe people are on to something, (I am thinking about all the Twin Towers theories) but mostly it’s just silly tin hat stories.

In this scenario Kate is collateral damage, and much like Harry’s complaints, the palace are not protecting her. It makes zero sense to me how easily this charade could have been avoided, yet it wasn’t. That’s what raises my suspicions. (By that I mean they didn’t need to post an image of her at all on Mother’s Day)

I would also say, a colleague of my husband lives in Chicago, the way it’s been reported in the US it’s incredible. They fully believe she is dead and what we are seeing is a body double.

She doesn't have signs that she has an ED on her hands/fingers 🙄

It's fairly apparent to anyone with medical knowledge what the surgery was for and also why she's probably on steroids with a swollen face.

If I'm right then she's had this health problem for a while, possibly many years, and is actually doing a good job of handling it whilst doing her everyday activities. It can also help to explain her weight.

There are other things in the world that cause ill health other than mental health problems or marital difficulties.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 12/03/2024 12:06

It's filling column inches on a slow news week.

Did anyone feel satisfaction upon knowing their government were torturing people?

Unfortunately significant numbers do/did and feel the same on issues like the death penalty etc.

PostItInABook · 12/03/2024 12:13

Conspiracy theories are the domain of the stupids and unconsciously incompetent.

Gossiping about other people is also a sign of insecurity, bitchiness and bitterness about their own lives. People who are genuinely fulfilled with their own lives don’t feel the need to engage in any of this nonsense.

Additionally, people are so self-entitled nowadays they feel like it’s their absolute right to know everything about anyone and when they don’t get that they turn into an arsehole, just make up shit and call it a ‘theory’.

KnitFastDieWarm · 12/03/2024 12:13

You clearly don’t know anything about bulimia. Google Russell’s sign. Then look at photos of her from over the years and look at how often she has plasters on her knuckles.

(She may well ALSO have the condition you refer to, in which case I feel even more sorry for her)

PostItInABook · 12/03/2024 12:15

Russell’s sign is not considered a reliable indicator of bulimia, and she would also have other signs if she was that entrenched in the disease. Stop talking shite.

Talipesmum · 12/03/2024 12:21

It’s gossip, selling a lot of papers and generating a lot of traffic and advertising revenue.

AlwaysGinPlease · 12/03/2024 13:42

Some people have way too much free time to spend wondering what a woman who is nothing to do with them is up to. Making assumptions and casting aspersions. It's ridiculous and they should be ashamed.

WhatWhereWho · 12/03/2024 13:46

Gives bored people into celebrity gossip something to talk about. Why are you interested in? Gossip or boredom?

Happyinarcon · 12/03/2024 13:54

Personally I’m not tuning into this particular drama. If the monarchy falls I’m sure someone will send me a text

pickledandpuzzled · 12/03/2024 14:01

I think it’s outrageous that people are diagnosing and sharing that guess based on a few photographs.

I also hope that if Kate has a significant health issue, the firm engineers her work load to preserve her health.

I hope (in vain) that people would allow her the privacy to recover in peace without expecting her to appear perfectly groomed and fit before she is good and ready- and that they’d avoid speculating.

So what was the surgery for????

Edited

I can categorically state that knuckles are not the same thing as fingers.

She does not have signs of bulimia. When my DC's were young I had plasters on my fingers and also burn marks on my arms due to taking things out of the oven. I was often tired and not paying attention. According to you they'd probably have been self harm scars though 🙄

Kittynoodle · 12/03/2024 14:07

I'm not going to go into it because it's personal to her. I do have medical knowledge and can take a fair guess at what it is based on several things. I'm not going to post it online though.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/03/2024 14:21

It distracts from the farce which is KC monarchy, too old, too I’ll and with a wife who has not blood connection to the heirs ( not much affection, either).

Also, MSM doesn’t want to talk too much about the globalist caused chaos in Europe , so some poor woman’s private health difficulties is a useful distraction.

AbeSimpsonsWhiskeySour · 12/03/2024 14:24

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen I think that's partly true, however why 'turn' on K&M?

IsawwhatIsaw · 12/03/2024 14:25

The story is conveniently filling up headline space in papers and online.
The space that might have been given instead to discussing the racist remarks aimed at Diane Abbott, or on real world news.

It’s because so many are discussing it. Including this thread

What made you start this thread rather than one on anything else?

And all the people posting saying everyone should be discussing Abbot or whatever, they too click and comment on this topic

Not having a go, but you might find your answer

Why 'obviously more ill' it was said right from the word go that she'd not be undertaking duties til Easter. That's still weeks away. There's nothing to suggest she won't be back then. At the moment - conspiracy theorists aside - her recovery is as they said.

I think Kate probably has relapsed her ED; given all the stress, and is trying to keep unwell photos of herself out of the press

ED? When has that been confirmed or is if again people with too much time on their hands speculating because she's so slim??

I would say obviously more ill because the photo was clearly rushed, so no pre-hospital photo or better preparation on the one put out.

As for not being off until Easter. Surely you have experienced those occasions where you expect to be able to be able to do some social things (but not go back to work) in one time period but you find it takes twice as long as you expected to recover. Even if you know you will not be work ready by a certain date, you happen to take longer to get to a partial recovery.
