To think there must be a dummy that works?

DD is coming up to 3 months old, she's exclusively breastfed and is generally a really good sleeper at night. The problem is that she'll only fall asleep (day and night) with either a nipple or a finger in her mouth.

We've tried Tommee Tippee and Mam dummies (all newborn/0-6m varieties they make) and she just spits them straight out even though some of them say 'guaranteed acceptance'!

Does anyone have dummy recommendations/ideas for a finger sucker? I'd really like to not have to sit for an hour with my finger in her mouth as she wakes up if you try to take it out too soon, and surely a sterile dummy would be cleaner!

Sometimes you just have to hold it in place a minute until she starts sucking.
But I have just googled and TT do different shapes, including one that is "breast like"
Also try warming it up

I have tried holding it in her mouth until she sucks but she cries and gets distressed, then the moment I let go she spits it out.

Yes, I know about those TT ones as they're the ones our big girl (2) took to really well, but this little one just won't have it. I've bought several different TT dummies.

Hadn't heard of warming them up though, will try that!

We've used these in NICU, they are really soft. I agree with pp, warm it up in a jug of water first.

Thank you, I don't know what it is about other dummies she doesn't like. Maybe they are too hard/cold. Will give them a go.

Also a few drops of breastmilk on the dummy might help?

Red2017 · 11/03/2024 08:08

I had the same problem and tried so many different ones.

Nanobebe are the only ones he will take.

One of my DC was like this. What worked was the old fashioned dummies with the bulbous end, they're called cherry-tip dummies.

Scarletttulips · 11/03/2024 08:11

I had twins and they both went for different shaped dummies - have a look in the chemist.

That's so simple, why hadn't I thought about this before! Thank you.

Thank you, I'll have a look at cherry tip dummies now. 👍🏻

BIBS dummies!

OceanicBoundlessness · 11/03/2024 08:33

My daughter has a lip tie so would never accept a dummy or bottle. Both would have caused her pain as her upper lip was tightly tethered to her gum just above her teeth.

sandberry · 11/03/2024 08:46

Depends on the baby’s oral anatomy: high palate, cherry dummies work best (most seem to use BIBS as a modern alternative). Prominent gag, need short with wide base.
Playing tug of war with the dummy helps keep it in once you find one she accepts.

VCVCVC · 11/03/2024 08:52

Also, BIBS does a ‘trial’ pack with four different dummy shapes which gives more options to find out what your baby likes. I think I bought about 10 different types before we found the one 😵‍💫

Ihatewinding · 11/03/2024 13:00

To encourage sucking once the dummy is in then tap the dummy with a finger nail until they start sucking and then for a bit longer as they will realise it's not a nipple/finger and try reject it 😂 should be firm enough to hear the tapping noise, and fairly rapid, then slow down once accepted and sucking. When redummying in the night you can do this as well until back to sleep - start firmer and faster then slow down as entering deep sleep and stop whacking themselves in the face and knocking it out. Might take some time but got an extra hour stretch doing this last night.

When inserting you want them to try accept it so stroke the corner of their mouth to get them to open, tease it in, back off and try again if really resisting, and aim up for the palate so avoid the tongue and gagging. Sometimes they need distracting to take it initially so I find jiggling and shhhhing seems to work.

Above worked for both of mine, read about the tactics on here actually haha, we use Mam dummies too.

onawave · 11/03/2024 13:49

Both mine would only have BIBS dummies. The cherry shaped ones. I think they were about a tenner for a pack of 2.
