Mainly posting for traffic and support.

I made my manager aware of concerns I have at work, and he advised me to take the wrong course of action. I sought advice from HR about the conflict of opinion who agreed with me as I am following guidelines - he was angry that I went to HR & insistent that I listen to him. So I did.

Someone I manage informally complained about me to him in relation to that. He tried to backtrack and accuse me of doing the wrong thing, so I went to his manager and HR with evidence that I sought advice and followed his lead.

Anyway things have settled down in terms of no one is being reprimanded or in trouble, but there likely will be more eyes on my manager and I going forward. Frankly I don’t even want to work with him, but I have to unless I find a new job asap. So just posting for advice on how to weather the storm. And how to protect myself at work. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

It sounds like you covered yourself and made sure if you had to take a course of action that you don't agree with you had it in writing.

Keep doing more of the same. If your boss asks you to do something that doesn't seem right keep checking with HR, checking the policies and getting it in writing from HR or your boss .

Some bosses just make decisions up offvthe top of their head as they go along - and will backtrack and deny if it goes wrong.

Say to your boss "Can you put that in writing because it's not what I would choose to do" if you have to. Knowing that they have to be accountable for their decision might make them think twice and at least you have the evidence if it goes wrong.

Keep being conscientious. Keep refusing to be a pushover. You never know if your boss is not very competent you might be stepping into their role one day. It's them that needs to up their game not you.

It sounds like you handled it well and had evidence to back up what happened, but the higher management didn’t really support you or do anything when the facts came out.

is this manager a bit useless?
Is there any chance they might leave themselves after this incident?

Thanks both, well I think my cards are definitely marked at work after this! I’m employed to be a senior manager so there’s only 2 rings of management above me.It’s easy for them to push blame on me for this, and I think if anything happens in the future they will come down on me. But this is only a small corner of a wider department so their power is limited.

I think employers listen more when you get a fit note for work stress they, start acting more professional?
