Being Videoed AIBU

Not sure if I am BU or not

For the last number of years I've volunteered as part of a hobby group and as part of this have been heavily involved in an IT admin system which coordinates all aspects of it. At this stage I'm one of the most knowledgeable people on this system

As I'm stepping down this year, I've been helping to train a few people up on the system and today I was giving a training session to a small group when I realised that I was being videoed

I've always hated public speaking and felt really uncomfortable with this and tbh lost my whole thread of thought

I was told that they were only trying to make sure that they got everything and I ended up feeling awkward about objecting, but also ended up feeling uncomfortable for the rest of the session

There's likely to be another training session and I'm not sure how to approach it

I know that they're saying that the recording is to ensure that they don't miss anything, but it also made me feel really self concious

Are you happy in principle to be recorded, but struggling with self-consciousness; or do you not want to be recorded, full stop?

Fraaahnces · 10/03/2024 00:01

Hell no. A) videoing you without your permission or knowledge is illegal, and B) they are stealing your intellectual property.
Do not let them get away with this at all.
They need to write their own training, not copy yours.

pootlin · 10/03/2024 00:04

They should have asked your permission. Say no to the next session.

It made me feel really uncomfortable, but their view was that they were trying to ensure that they didn't miss anything which I can kind of get

Absolutely should not be doing this without asking first. If you refuse they shouldn’t do it or pressure you. It’s a bloody voluntary role for god’s sake! Well out if order!

ManchesterLu · 10/03/2024 00:07

Nobody should ever be recording anyone without asking their permission and it is also your right to say no if they DO ask.

Grimchmas · 10/03/2024 00:08

Just a no nonsense, authoritative "make as many notes as you need, but no recording me on video or audio, thanks" at the start of the session.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 10/03/2024 00:08

I deliver training at work and recently asked someone to turn off their video recording of me. They were doing it so they could watch it again when they needed to, so not for a bad reason, but i just didn't like it.
Yanbu at all, please speak up and say no.

WhateverMate · 10/03/2024 00:09

They should have asked, it's rude not to.

Really?

Please link to the legislation that supports your assertation.

You do not have to consent to being videoed. If it would be useful could you say I'm happy for you to audio record but no filming in the session please. Unless someone has a disability where they need the video to access the class, then I can't see any problem with politely refusing it.
If you don't explicitly say no then some may do it without you noticing.

KarenSmithsWeatherBoobs · 10/03/2024 01:08

I organise training at work. We rarely record but on the odd occasion we do, I have to obtain consent in writing from everyone delivering the training, along with notice of how the recording will be distributed (internally only) and a warning to everyone else attending the training that it is being recorded and they may appear.

Greengagesnfennel · 10/03/2024 01:36

Yanbu.

I think it's ok to say no sorry I'm not comfortable being videod.

MrsJaneIsTheName · 10/03/2024 03:07

I present for work too, and someone in the group had set the session to record, not the other Tutor who does the session before me.
I stopped the recording before continuing

Fraaahnces · 10/03/2024 03:25

@VeniVidiWeeWee
Of course if you live outside of Aus, it’s likely different, but this is our legislation.
Failure to get consent for filming in a public place for a commercial purpose can result in a fine issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or a breach of copyright.

If you are on private property, it is only legal to film in the space if the owner permits. They can ask you to stop filming and evict you.
If you don’t comply, you can be liable for civil and criminal penalties related to trespass.
If you are using covert means in order to record someone, you may be charged with an offence under section 547C of the Crimes Act 1900focused on ‘peeping or prying’ on another person.

Home | ACCC

The ACCC is Australia's competition regulator and national consumer law champion. We promote competition and fair trading and regulate national infrastructure to make markets work for everyone.

I don't think I would have continued once I realised I was being recorded. Make clear there is to be no recording but note taking and questions are encouraged at the start of any future training.
