WTF! Insurance renewal…

Sparksi · 09/03/2024 19:34

We rent and so this is simply contents insurance for our small house in a safe area. Never made a claim. We’ve been paying £160 a year (£13 a month direct debit) for the last two years.

Just read the renewal email - thank goodness I did… they want £980 (£80 a month) next year! AIBU to think they are having a laugh?

We have very basic cover of £15k. This is the general info on the property

• 2 bedroom semi detached house built in 2022
• the property has no preservation order, nor is it listed
• rented unfurnished
• your permanent home that is not used for trade or professional purposes
• no business visitors come to the property
• your property is usually occupied during the day between 9am and 5pm
• all members of the household are relatives of you or the second policyholder
• your property is not left unoccupied for more than 45 days in a row

Yes that’s too much. Gave you looked at other quotes? We pay £40 a month which includes both buildings and contents insurance.

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/03/2024 19:39

That’s ridiculous, best guess is that your insurer just doesn’t want to insure you any more for some reason (it won’t be personal). Shop around.

KEG05 · 09/03/2024 19:39

Not contents insurance but our car insurance has doubled this year from £359 a year to nearly £800. Sickening

Sparklesocks · 09/03/2024 19:39

Premiums have gone up, but some companies also stealthily increase their auto-renewal quotes knowing a lot of people won’t check 👀

I end up using a different company every year as I always find a significantly better quote elsewhere.

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 09/03/2024 19:39

Honestly look at utility Warehouse our whole bill come to between 250 and 300 a month for..

Gas

Broadband
Telephone

Building and house insurance

Oh and free lightbulbs

SecondHandFurniture · 09/03/2024 19:40

They don't want to insure you any more. Possibly due to high claims in your area.

You should be able to get that down easily. Try LV=.

MassageForLife · 09/03/2024 19:42

That's insane!

I paid £53 (in January) for my contents cover - for a year. And got £33 cashback!

EmmaEmerald · 09/03/2024 19:42

Glad you posted this

I wasn’t working for a period last year, went to renew home contents insurance and was declined by three companies. They all had big increases but said declining was because I wasn’t working.

I am working now but the increased prices made me think it might not be worth having. I haven’t sorted it yet. I think insurance companies maybe don’t want policies that aren’t worth x amount.

I am in a one bed flat and given the contents of my flat, I only wanted the minimum level of cover. When I got that policy originally, it was from a student type company.

I’d ring them and negotiate because you might find it comes to £20 a month or something. My mum has to do battle for her full house insurance every year but that’s different as it includes buildings etc.

I understand car insurance has gone the same way.

It is on my list of things to do but given I wouldn’t get things replaced as “new for old” I’m not sure what to do. The sofa I sit on as I type is about 25 years old.

Sparksi · 09/03/2024 19:46

Thanks everyone. Just done a Compare the market and can get it for as little as £6 or £7 a month. Is it ok to start paying for a new policy while my old one is still active? I’ll ring them and cancel it tomorrow

Just start the new policy the day after the old one expires.

AlohaRose · 09/03/2024 19:56

Why would you pay while the existing policy is in force? Just set it up to start immediately the current period expires.

No you set it up to start the day after your current one expires in

Theunamedcat · 09/03/2024 20:15

My car insurance was £115 more this year than last I called them and ended up paying less than last year

With my house insurance I told them it made less sense not to cover me at a reasonable price when I was unemployed because I was home all day and couldn't afford to go out at night therfore there was less risk even she thought my logic was sound and increased premiums made zero sense but in the end I switched anyway 😂

KindleGirlie · 09/03/2024 20:26

Our pet insurance went up around £40 per month, and for the first time I rang to ask if there was anything they could do and they said no! I went elsewhere and got it £80 cheaper per month than the renewal. I couldn’t believe they wouldn’t offer anything apart from increasing the excess.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 09/03/2024 20:37

Don't forget to go through quidco/topcashback if there are any offers on for contents insurance.

Both my car and home insurance were gonna go up massively if I'd let them autorenew, but I got both a fair bit under what I was paying currently through comparethemarket (via topcashback)

I told them that too
Just got told I was higher risk. Maybe they thought I'd set fire to the place!

hairbrush1234 · 09/03/2024 21:38

They are probably just trying to get out of the contents only market. Don't be double covered - if you have a claim, they will both try to get the other one to pay. Just start the new one when the old one expires.

Todaysproblem · 09/03/2024 21:45

Our car insurance went up from £2,000 odd a year to over £5,500, I heavily searched for quotes on every comparison website that exists. This is insane to me. We’re gonna have to sell our beloved car, we can’t afford that. What is happening??

Ps: we have a 18 years + NCB

EmmaEmerald · 09/03/2024 22:05

@Todaysproblem Is it one of the popular ones to steal?

Mmm… it’s a hard one to steal, but it’s really, really pretty.

mitogoshi · 09/03/2024 22:42

I pay £220 a year for buildings and contents, renewed last week! I'm guessing it's location based though. Try compare the market or their ilk

mitogoshi · 09/03/2024 22:45

@Todaysproblem

That's crazy, my dd pays £940 despite being young, new car and high risk profession (according to company was less as a student!) try a broker, that saved her over £1000!
