To be disappointed about new house

lolarosea · 09/03/2024 13:53

Want to start this by saying I am obviously very grateful to have my own place in what is a very difficult housing market

Picked up the keys for my first house yesterday to find that since the viewing the neighbours have completely filled their yard with rubbish bags (from the ground to the top of the 6ft walls). It was bad at the viewing but I was told by the owners that this was temporary and that the neighbours were getting a skip. This was 6 months ago so clearly wasn't true ☹️

Has anyone had anything like this and managed to get it resolved?

Call your solicitor, they'll be in breach of contract.

No they won't - it's the neighbours who have done it.

You can't really expect to excercise control over what other people do in their own property. Why are you so disappointed? Just enjoy your own house..

This website says you can report to the Environmental Health Department dept at your local council. I think that would be justified because such a large volume of rubbish will attract rats.

But the seller has left the property in that condition, I don’t think it matters who put it there

Ignore me-I misunderstood what OP was saying

Oblomov24 · 09/03/2024 14:11

Agree. Seller knew neighbour had done this. Take photos and Report to your solicitor.

sweetpickle2 · 09/03/2024 14:16

Did you ask the owners formally eg in writing through the solicitors, or informally eg at the viewing? Seems unlikely the solicitors will do much here unless you have in writing from the previous owners “the neighbours have never put loads of rubbish in their garden”.

Seller forms ask about neighbour disputes but unless it’s something that’s logged with the police or environmental health you can just lie and say no.

The seller has done nothing wrong, so you have no comeback there. I would contact Environmental Health.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 09/03/2024 14:30

You very definitely need to speak to your solicitor because you have recourse if the vendors failed to disclose any issues they had with your neighbour.

Why is she disappointed? I'd imagine it's because she doesn't want to live next door to a shit hole.

MississippiAF · 09/03/2024 14:42

Definitely contact environmental health

AhBiscuits · 09/03/2024 14:49

Call environmental health, tell them you have seen rats in the neighbour's rubbish.

Dotdashdottinghell · 09/03/2024 14:58

Sorry, I thought your sellers had left the rubbish, my mistake!

Persipan · 09/03/2024 15:02

When I first moved into my old flat, it was next door to a property where the shed/yard area was, to put it mildly, full of crap. Which I had somehow completely not thought about when I bought it. However, over the period of time I lived there, that flat charged hands multiple times and the yard was gradually tarted up in various ways (much to the disappointment of my cat, who loved the shed full of crap). Nothing is permanent. One way or another things will be okay. In the meantime, get yourself some net curtains, and enjoy living in your home.

puzzledout · 09/03/2024 17:41

Presumably it's only visible from upstairs window?

Just try to ignore and enjoy your new home.

This, with bells on. Do tell them you have actually seen the rats (and it's not really a lie because rats are never that far away!).
