To ask a post about something very shallow? Upper lip hair…

I just wanted to ask how you all deal with upper lip hair. Very superficial post, I know!

I do stuff like thread my eyebrows, have leg waxes and shave my armpits, but I’ve never done anything to my upper lip hair, mainly because it’s something I’ve never really noticed.

I am very pale and fair-skinned, so any hair I do have is quite fair and light. I thought that would be the case with my upper lip hair. I really don’t think it’s that noticeable unless you come up very close to my face.

I’ve just been thinking about it more since I went for an eyebrow threading session the other day, when the woman who threaded my eyebrows asked if I also wanted my upper lip hair done. She’s someone I’ve been going to for ages and is very nice, so I think she was just being polite by checking to see if I wanted to get my upper lip hair waxed, and obviously she’d notice it because it’s her job to notice it and to ask about it.

Since I’ve never thought about getting it waxed or anything, it made me a bit paranoid and made me question whether I should do anything with it.

What does everyone do with theirs? I’m just a bit worried that if I start waxing it or whatever, that I’ll have to keep on doing it otherwise it will grow back thicker. You can probably tell that I don’t know much about it, and my main concern is that if I start doing anything to it that I’ll just have to continue that for fear of ending up with a big moustache 🤣 which I definitely don’t want 🤣

To add another (maybe irrelevant?) thing into the mix, I’m single at the moment but looking at getting back into dating, and now I’m nervous that when/if I meet someone, they’ll notice my upper lip hair and comment on it.

Going off on a big tangent now, but I’m quite low maintenance with my appearance. I like clothes, but don’t follow fashion, mainly due to not earning enough money to do so. I make sure I’m clean and presentable, of course, but I never really wear make up, out of not really knowing much about make up and also just not wanting to spend much time each day putting on make up and then taking it off again. I’m nervous about the idea of being with someone who likes women who wear lots of make-up and who always look perfectly camera-ready (e.g. women you see in the public eye on TV and in the papers), because that’s not me.

When I’m a bit down about things, I generally make less effort with my appearance (which I hate admitting!), and I think the pandemic and its legacy has been a factor in this. More recently though, I’ve felt more motivated and energetic generally, so I’ve cared more about my appearance and and health and this has been positive and helpful for me. I just want to maintain that.

Sorry, lots of food for thought in this post actually!

Don't do anything to it. If its fair and not noticeable then leave it.

YoureWinningAtLife · 09/03/2024 15:02

Veet Facial wax strips.
Every. Damn. Week.

Time40 · 09/03/2024 15:27

Just shave it - takes about four seconds.

Interested in this. Can I just ask, does it make it grow back thicker??

No the opposite in fact, I’m really happy with the results.

Spinet · 09/03/2024 15:35

I use face wax strips. But when it tells you not to wax the same spot twice, believe it. I've been nursing an attractive scab for a week.

YoureWinningAtLife · 09/03/2024 16:09

ouch @Spinet
I always rub a very fine dusting of talc on, practically rub it off again really, before pressing on the strip. It then sticks to the hairs, rather than your skin.
It also helps to warm the strips to separate them but then lie them sticky side up on the edge of the sink. The cold porcelain then makes the wax cold again so that it isn’t too warm and runny when you first press it on. Can’t remember where I read that but I’ve used this method ever since with no issue. I just buy one of those small holiday sized talcs. It lasts for years.

Facial wax strips.......and not a superficial post at all, who wants a moustache!

lap90 · 09/03/2024 16:11

I have mine waxed and threaded when doing eyebrows.

Lucinda7 · 09/03/2024 16:18

I use tweezers on eyebrows and upper lip. For peach fuzz on cheeks I use an ordinary disposable razor. Hair doesn't grow back thicker or thinner.

I use this, I received it in a beauty box subscription.

I have had threading and like that too but my new gadget is great as I can use it at home whenever

This is what I use too, I have very fair hair and it does the job. Doesn't grow back thicker.

Abitlosttoday · 09/03/2024 16:29

I know nothing about removing upper lip hair, but I do know a lot about skincare, teeth whitening, make up... various other 'superficial' topics. You don't need to apologise for taking an interest in your appearance. We live in a world where our appearance as woman is (too often) prioritised above all other things about us. An interest in how we look is programmed into us from birth. I enjoy bits of it, reject others and absolutely refuse to judge any woman on any grooming or beautifying she chooses to do.

I use a mixture of methods

I use wax strips, threading spring stick or the hair removal cream

I do occasionally go to salon for sides of face as it's hard to DIY I find

The wax strips never have enough wipes for afterwards

Wish they were available separately

Kwasi · 09/03/2024 17:16

I had IPL (similar to laser) and it was the best money I ever spent.

CitizenofGotham · 09/03/2024 17:48

I use Veet hair removal cream (for face or for body, only leave on for a few minutes) every few weeks. Really easy just wipe it off with a bit of tissue and rinse.

Don't worry about not wearing make up. Anyone worth it won't care. I have a few friends who don't wear makeup and it's never been an issue in their dating life, both married to lovely men now.

FrodisCapering · 09/03/2024 17:57

I have fair hair too. Personally, I can't stand my upper lip hair. I don't have loads but it bothers me. I've been having electrolysis since last September and I've seen great results.
Downsides: it's expensive and a big commitment. I've been going for a 15min session every week. It is also not particularly pleasant, especially the further up you go.
If you choose to do it, make sure you go to a reputable place with experienced people.
