Am I overthinking this nursery situation?

Name change as regular poster and because I'm probably just being daft!

DS is 2, absolute whirlwind never sat still, even wriggles in his sleep!
Since nursery Tuesday he's managed to fall over and bump his head on a wooden toy and also fallen at the park. Both of these have resulted in a bruise. Nursery messaged this morning asking what had happened so they could do an incident form.
Now I'm stressing they think a. I'm a shit mum. B. Need to send something off to safeguarding?
I mean bar wrapping up in Cotten wool am I in the wrong to let my DS be a child and run around? I was there for both incidents but I can't catch him in a split second.
I don't know if I'm just worrying for nothing.

They don't think that you are a shit mum or that you are being abusive.

They have to note EVERY mark that a child comes in with, so there is no come-back for the nursery.

You are definitely overthinking. Chill.

This is a mobile child, they will have stumbles and little injuries like this. I expect the nursery want to cover themselves and have something in writing that this minor injury didn't happen in their care. Of course they'll have safeguarding responsibilities as a care provider but unless there is a pattern of issues raising concerns I wouldn't worry.

dottiedodah · 08/03/2024 09:07

Just explain the situation to them. They just need to know what happened, so they can mark it down is all. No worries!

happystory · 08/03/2024 09:09

Quite normal procedure, and actually very good practice. Don't worry!

Yawnnn · 08/03/2024 09:09

I'd be more worried if the nursery DIDN'T mention his bruises.

Blessedbethefruitz · 08/03/2024 09:10

Is he new there? I got some side eyes from nursery when ds started running at 9 months (into doors, walls, etc) resulting in some epic bruises. They soon saw him doing it there and didn't mention it other than sympathy for his bumps! His baby sister is in no such rush so doesn't get bumps like those, some kids are just wild.

Peppapig24 · 08/03/2024 09:11

Thanks all. Maybe I'll turn my brain off for 10 🤣. I think it's because he's had 2 things is 3 days. I'll put the cotton wool away for now!

They’re being responsible, I’d be pleased

PTSDBarbiegirl · 08/03/2024 09:12

They will realise what he's like as he'll be trying to navigate the busy nursery environment so just need to record any bruise etc because they need to be able to show it didn't happen in their environment.

Peppapig24 · 08/03/2024 09:13

@Blessedbethefruitz no but has only just got a new key worker and his last one has just left. Although they do always say when I pick him up 'wow he doesn't stop does he' nope nope he doesn't!

they don't think you are a shit mum. toddlers are clumsy they noticed the bruise they want to register what happened and it didn't happen in nursery it's just a record, relax.

AmusedMaker · 08/03/2024 09:13

Not massively over thinking. They’re safeguarding themselves yes, but also looking out for your child. Which is what you’d want.

rainyskylight · 08/03/2024 09:13

This is normal procedure. They need to know and have records of what bumps happen in nursery and what happens outside, so that they’re not liable for anything that happened at home. There is secondary monitoring for safeguarding concerns but normal bumps and scrapes won’t cause any flags to raise.

DappledThings · 08/03/2024 09:17

DD used to be in the nursery accident book so often they joked about getting her own own individual book to save filling up the main one.

They just need to have a record that a cruise didn't occur under their watch. They aren't judging.

SherbetDips · 08/03/2024 09:19

Don’t worry it’s just for their records. They have to note if an accident happened in the setting or in the home for their health and safety records etc. it’s all good. 😊

Peppapig24 · 08/03/2024 09:35

@DappledThings I have a feeling this will be DS as well!

Thank you all for putting my mind at rest and I promise I'll try to stop overthinking now x

They need to document that the injuries existed prior to him coming to nursery, to cover themselves if someone accuses them. And it saves time if they notice it later in the day and have to find out if it happened there or not. Being able to talk about when and how they got hurt also helps the child process it emotionally if they want to talk about it.

Our nursery has always asked us to let them know about existing injuries just so they can note them down. I don't feel like they've judged us.

PuttingDownRoots · 08/03/2024 09:48

We had to take our then 3yo to A&E three times in two months for head injuries.

We did get a HV visit.... who was completely unconcerned as nursery had a long list of injuries she got there, as well as home cuts and bruises. And DD2 got in the act while the HV was there with her climbing antics.

Hairspray123 · 08/03/2024 11:00

All very normal procedure dont worry.

You are not a shit Mom

takealettermsjones · 08/03/2024 11:07

As PPs it's normal... I had to do this when my DD was about 2 and had run across a playground, fallen, and then skidded about six feet before coming to an abrupt stop at the end of a slide. Line of bruising across her forehead and horrendous grazes all up her hands and forearms. It looked absolutely awful, and boy did I feel like a shit mum! But nursery were absolutely fine about it, they just needed me to verify how it happened and that it didn't happen there!

user63737383882 · 08/03/2024 11:13

I work in a nursery and some children are just clumsy. The reason nursery are asking is so that they can note down he came in with it and that it didn't happen at nursery to cover themselves.

ColleenDonaghy · 08/03/2024 11:17

Very normal. You'll probably find you sign a lot of accident forms. Grin Our record was three in one day for the one child - they said there probably should've been two more but they gave up completing them.

Bumps and bruises are just day-to-day life at this age.

At one point DC1 had a massive bump on each side of her forehead - one from home, one from nursery. We all agreed we felt they'd just evened out and we could all stop feeling bad. Grin

Workawayxx · 08/03/2024 11:29

Try not to worry, they're just following procedure. Ive had to do a couple of those forms for DD age 3 as she has bumped her head, got a grazed knee etc at home. She's generally fairly sensible but can be clumsy! Nobody is going to expect a toddler to never get a bruise or bump.

Mel2023 · 08/03/2024 11:40

They’re safeguarding themselves and also looking out for your child. Don’t worry! Toddlers fall over and always have scrapes and bruises, they’ll know that. It happens at nursery too (I’m always signing accident forms for bumps). A few weekends ago my almost 2yr old ran into the kitchen table (bruise on forehead), managed to bite into his own lip having a tantrum (looked like he’d bust his lip), and then a bruise emerged on his cheek and I had absolutely no idea what had happened there, although he was throwing himself around at a play area earlier in the day. Was slightly nervous taking him into nursery on the Monday as the kid looked like he’d been in a fight 😂. Although I’ve never signed accident forms for incidents that didn’t happen in nursery, I’ve just told them what happened at drop off and that’s been enough. They just want it recorded that it didn’t happen at nursery.

mindutopia · 08/03/2024 11:46

It's very normal. I think if they have a noticeable injury when you drop them off, you just need to tell the staff. Otherwise, if they notice it, they will assume it happened on their watch and will need to do the paperwork to document it (and they may be equally shitting themselves that your child has an injury that they can't explain). Just say, sorry, you forgot to mention but he fell over recently at x and did y.
