to have sent DS to nursery today?

Last week DS's cousins came to visit us and they played together all day.
In the last 2 days both cousins have come out in chicken pox.
DS is 2.5 and hasnt had chicken pox yet, so could be incubating it.

I checked him very carefully for spots this morning and he has none. He is also very well in himself.... so I sent him to nursery.

If I hadnt sent him I would have lost the money for it and I really rely on having this one day a week to myself to catch up on housework/shopping (I have a 4 week old as well so I just dont have any other time to do anything!)

So AIBU?

I would have sent him too. He may be at home for a while with chicken pox soon anyway!

YANBU, if people kept children home from nursery/school every time they had been in contact with a contagious disease, the attendance records would be lousy!

YANBU! Chicken pox is a fact of life! DS may not have caught it anyway and putting life on hold for 'just in case' is the road to insanity!

YANBU - he could be incubating it, but equally he might not get it.

The incubation period is long for cp - up to 21 days so you can't be expected to not go out for 3 weeks just in case.

YANBU! Half the children at the nursery might be incubating it. He might not get it. They are usually quite ill before you see any spots anyway so if he's perky, he's ok at the mo

God, you'd never send them if you worried about everything they could be incubating. Send em. Chicken pox is no biggie, just one of those childhood things they will get sooner or later.

WanderingTrolley · 26/03/2008 10:06

It's a hard one this. On the one hand yes, you could phone the nursery and see what they say - then they can at least warn relevant parents that it may be around, so the children can avoid each other, or you can never send your children to school ever.....

By relevant parents, I mean those who're pregnant, immuno compromised etc., because chicken pox can be dangerous for some. I can think of three people for whom a child with chicken pox would be a real health problem.

Three weeks off is a long time for something he might have. I think it's one where you have to send them - but I would mention it to the nursery tbh.

Some people still have chicken pox parties. I was hosting a party for my friend's 3 year old and my daughter came out with a couple of spots and I had no idea what it was - during the party she really started to scratch and I checked and she had about 100 spots suddenly! I was horrified and really apologetic and every mum said not to worry they would have brought their kids anyway to get the CP over and done with.
