Teacher birthday gift

Sheneversaidthat · 07/03/2024 20:02

A collection took place at my daughter’s school for her Yr5 teachers birthday present, which I did not contribute to.
We already do Christmas and end of term, feels plenty.
Are birthday presents the norm at your school? I’m interested.

Never had a birthday present from children in 30 years of being in nursery. I have had get well soon home made cards and some wedding gifts when I got married. But never a birthday.

Starlightstarbright3 · 07/03/2024 20:05

I have never even known when any teacher’s birthday’s are never mind send anything

Backtothe90ties · 07/03/2024 20:06

Absolutely not the norm, I would be mortified and I say that as a year 5 teacher. I actually don’t tell the kids it’s my birthday for this reason. How do you even know it’s her birthday?

Creatureofhabit87 · 07/03/2024 20:06

No!!

VickyEadieofThigh · 07/03/2024 20:07

Ridiculous. I don't know my dog's vet's birthday - should I be getting her a present?

Scab99 · 07/03/2024 20:08

I'm a teacher, I'd be totally weirded out if the parents of the kids I teach clubbed together to get me a gift!! A kid once gave me a celebration sweetie as a birthday gift which I loved 🤣♥️ but a real gift, no way!!!

OMGitsnotgood · 07/03/2024 20:13

I've never bought a teacher a birthday present, largely because their primary days predated social media and I'd have never known when it was. That said, a friend's teacher DD makes a point of letting the class know it's her birthday a few days before.... and then posts the resulting presents all over social media, saying how much her class loves her. I think if a teacher had publicised her birthday, I would have the children maybe make her a card, but agree, Christmas and end of year presents are enough (too much anyway for some people).

BendingSpoons · 07/03/2024 20:13

DD has made her teacher a card and one time asked to take in a KitKat for her teacher's birthday, which I let her do. (This was a normal KitKat from the drawer at home, but apparently something the teacher really liked). I've never done proper presents and never known about the birthday with enough time to organise something! Usually it is just my DC commenting at pick up 'it was Mrs Xs birthday today'.

Fueledbycoffee · 07/03/2024 20:39

As a teacher I would be absolutely mortified if I got a birthday gift from the class. One year my TA brought in a birthday cake to share with the children for a "big" birthday resulting in a flurry of handmade cards which was super sweet but if I'd had a present I'd have been so embarrassed. It's ridiculous to be having a birthday collection!

Sheneversaidthat · 07/03/2024 20:59

Thanks all, this is good knowledge.
I’m feeling less of a tightwad.

caringcarer · 07/03/2024 21:02

I've never known this in any schools I've taught in. Teachers tend to keep quiet about birthdays as they are expected to take cakes in for staff. I got a surprise wedding present from some students though a bottle of champagne and a large cheese platter. Students knew I loved cheese. I took them in the wavy scissors I had used on my homemade invitations after the wedding. They became known as the wedding scissors.

Hairspray123 · 07/03/2024 21:02

It's odd.

Shinyandnew1 · 07/03/2024 21:05

I have never known this to happen in 25 years of teaching.

Habbibu · 07/03/2024 21:11

I'm a primary teacher and I really would not like this. I wouldn't like the kids knowing when my birthday was at all. 19

shoppingshamed · 07/03/2024 21:12

How did they know it was the teachers birthday? Are there outside of school friendships involved?

Hmmm, I’m not actually sure.
He doesn’t seem like the type to have publicised it so some kind of insider knowledge, I would imagine.

I've seen it before. One ht put it in a newsletter. Another teacher did the same. I thought it was very inappropriate.

Hesma · 07/03/2024 21:30

No way!!!!

Dogzombie · 07/03/2024 21:54

I’m a teacher. That’s weird. I’d be mortified if parents felt they had to do this!

Lizzy1980 · 07/03/2024 22:00

It’s like some people are going out of their way to find new weird and wonderful ways to spend money unnecessarily. Any idea who’s idea it was in the first place OP? I don’t blame you for not contributing. I think the usual end of year gift is enough.

LynetteScavo · 07/03/2024 22:01

I've only my known twice when my DCs teacher had a birthday. Both times I sent them in with a bunch of flowers. I've never heard of a class collection though.

Elaston · 29/06/2024 22:14

Seems a bit overboard!
