Arrrgh Crufts coverage - "the group is split by gender" 😩
What has happened to the descriptor word sex?

wetotter · 07/03/2024 22:50

For most dogs, they have no gender because the correct answer id "neutered"

Show dogs have to be intact though

Commentator is probably having conniptions working out how to avoid saying "bitch" before the watershed

MadameCamembert · 07/03/2024 22:52

Still a lesser crime than referring to a dog as a ‘fur baby’.

VivienneDelacroix · 07/03/2024 22:54

Most dogs are neutered or speyed so they would all be they/them anyway. (Although not sure if they have to be "in tact" at competition level).

But surely removing balls doesn’t mean a dog is therefore sexless/genderless? In the same way removing a penis doesn’t make a man not a man. Or have I missed this?

DisappearingGirl · 07/03/2024 23:05

What a ridiculous article. It seems to be suggesting "gender" is determined by stereotypes:

If you have a biologically female dog that is very aggressive, could you say it has a male gender? ... if you want to call a female dog a boy because they’re big and loud, why not?

Or maybe you just have a dog that happens to be a loud kick-ass female. Why not?

FiveFoxes · 07/03/2024 23:23

When they said "gender" on Crufts, I found myself shouting "sex!" at the TV. Then I wondered what my teens, who weren't in the same room, thought was going on!

Marcymae · 07/03/2024 23:52

DH told me he was into adulthood before he realised it wasn’t the case that all dogs were boys and all cats were girls!

MzHz · 07/03/2024 23:59

SweetFemaleAttitude · 07/03/2024 19:57

Haha. That's quite funny.

They'll be putting their pronouns next 🤣wuff/ruff

That’s proper funny! 🤣

How did he think they had puppies/kittens??

Mumteedum · 08/03/2024 07:20

@TesticularHeft 😆 ok, I'll let them off!

Also, that is some user name! 😁

TesticularHeft · 08/03/2024 07:30

@Mumteedum ha thanks! It's quite vulgar isn't it but I watched an episode of walking dead and Denny duqette (I watch greys anatomy not walking dead) said something about someone not having the testicular heft to do something and I loved it!

currahee · 08/03/2024 07:34

‘Best opposite sex’ is used on the place boards in the ring, and on the rosettes given out.

I know there's no such squeamishness about the word in the actual dog world - it's the ridiculous pandering of the media that annoyed me.

Cats are the mummies, dogs are dads, kitten = daughter, puppy = son. C’mon isn’t it obvious smh 🙄

clarkkentsglasses · 07/03/2024 22:28

My dog identifies as a large German shepherd

He is in fact a Yorkshire Terrier

Maltese identifying is a Rottweiler here 🤣

I'm so old I remember when gender was interchangeable with sex.

But these days it does seem strange to apply this word to dogs!

Edited

I'm so old I remember when it wasn't.

Gender crept in because of the association with the s-word.

Mealy-mouthed.

Dogs do have to be entire to compete in official breed standard competitions like Crufts, yes. Not for things like agility and obedience.

It's different for cat shows, where they have separate competitions for neutered and entire animals.

WingSlutz · 08/03/2024 08:07

My DDog has yet to decide on a gender, or if (s)he has, I haven't been informed. Therefore I use his sex based pronouns.
Mind you, after he'd been neutered, my youngest DC asked if he was a girl now!

HeartofSaturdayNight · 08/03/2024 08:11

Well this thread made me laugh.

Whale gender, OP?! Lol

I now correct every form that asks me for my gender and replace it with sex. I don't subscribe to gender ideology. It's like asking "Which kind of Christian are you?" Also, my sex wasn't assigned at birth by a magical sorting hat either but observable in utero just like the vast majority of the population.

I wouldnt trust a vet or doctor who pandered to this madness.

Also, I’m post menopausal, and effectively ‘spayed’ now. My sex is still female!

One of the great things about dogs, is that no matter what a person does to their body or appearance, they still know what sex a person is. They don’t operate in unreality.
I don’t think they care what they are defined as, but it grinds my gears as a dog lover to see them referred to this way.

NCForQuestions · 07/03/2024 20:14

Yep, I winced at that as well.

Perhaps they pop around each dog at the start and ask them how they identify?

Slippery slope…

😺My name is Ms Tiddles McMousecatcher and I identify as a chihuahua…

SevenSeasOfRhye · 08/03/2024 08:16

I've had a hysterectomy and oophorectomy and I joke with my cats that DH is the only unneutered person in the house!

This is the result of the word being co-opted by an ideology- it was used fairly interchangeably with sex to mean the same thing - sex. And then the terminology gender roles etc was used by academic circles in sociology, women's studies, which then warped in to queer studies, who developed the concepts of gender identity and now it means something else despite being used quite widely to mean sex also - the ambiguity is often used to further the ideology as well.

Other terms and words have also been co-opted eg "assigned at birth" which was a medical term for very rare cases for babies born with v rare differences of sexual development (aka intersex conditions) (and not by any means all DSD people)
