If you grew up in the 80s/early 90s. Did you do extra curricular activities?

I'm interested to see what is the norm.

I did nothing, no swimming, dance, brownies or anything like that. I do remember other girls doing Brownies and Ballet after school and asking my mum if I could go. She shut it down and told me I wouldn't like it.

These days of course most children do a lot of extra curricular activities but wondering if perhaps it wasn't such a thing years ago.

I briefly went to Brownies and quit because it was boring to me unlike my brothers who went to Beavers/Cubs/Scouts and got to collect badges and go on camps. That was the end of any extra curricular activities for me! Some of my brothers got to do football, karate and/or swimming. I guess they didn’t know what to do with a girl!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 07/03/2024 21:29

Born in the first half of the 90ies, so I suppose that counts.

violin, choir and horse riding were my consistent extracurriculars (from about 5 to late teens / early 20ies).

other extracurriculars:

judo, acrobatics (short time, I loved it but my lack of coordination unfortunately embarrassed my mum 😕), ballet (even shorter), kayaking, ice hockey (never again!), some “hip-hop” (=< or whatever our instructor decided to call hiphop 😂) as a young teen.

swimming lessons every summer but that was more of a holiday activity than an extracurricular 🤔

I was also a camp leader and social chair!

Dixiechickonhols · 07/03/2024 21:32

Yes 80s childhood and did brownies then guides weekly at a church and went on pack holiday and camping.
I also did tap and ballet weekly from age 3 at a local dance school.
When I was primary school age I also went to Sunday school for an hour Sunday afternoons. We weren’t particularly religious.
My brother played football and cubs. Most children did similar I lived in a semi detached house in suburbs.

I did Brownies and swimming club, but we never did family outings at the weekends like kids seem to now. We just played or hung out with friends.

I definitely had as many family outings as a DC as we do now. We still saw friends and often just played/hung out but they came with us on outings too. Same for my DC now.

DanielGault · 07/03/2024 21:33

Hockey, camogie, music, Scouts. Not all at the same time though. I flitted. Same as yourself with swimming, I taught myself and just about stay afloat.

Dixiechickonhols · 07/03/2024 21:33

Oh we had swimming lessons too weekly at the council pool.

Madcats · 07/03/2024 21:34

Maybe it just felt like it to me, but school always seemed to do country dancing and barn dances to raise funds. No barns were involved, just a school hall and canteen.

Caswallonthefox · 07/03/2024 21:36

Swimming. Enjoyed the training, hated the gala.

Titsywoo · 07/03/2024 21:36

Born in 1978 so was a child in the 80s/early 90s. Did Sunday school, ballet and brownies when I was little then guides, youth clubs, swimming team as a younger teen. Was quite involved in church community (although not really very religious!) and did summer play schemes until I was 12 then I helped at them (2 weeks every summer). Joined a choir at 13 for a while. Once I discovered booze and boys at 14 it all went to shit though.Grin

PostItInABook · 07/03/2024 21:37

Swimming, gymnastics, netball, cross country, St John Badgers mainly.

nothing just read books for fun!

I definitely remember having less books than my DC have now. I read and re-read my books loads and used the library. My DC really enjoy reading too but not sure they've ever re-,read a book and my DD at least has lots on her shelf she's not read yet.

Dymaxion · 07/03/2024 21:39

Swimming lessons until I could swim proficiently. Brownies. Horse riding, although this involved being used as slave labour for 8 hours for 15 minutes falling off a pony !

Midwinter91 · 07/03/2024 21:41

Yes rainbows/ brownies, dance lessons, swimming lessons, music lessons

My Grandmother arranged it all and took us though, my Mum wasn’t interested in us doing anything she didn’t seem to think it was important.

bellsbuss · 07/03/2024 21:42

I did Brownies, then Guides, swimming and Drama classes. I came from a poor family as well

Scalby · 07/03/2024 21:45

Lots of after-school clubs that were free, athletics, hockey, football, cross country, etc. I ran with the local running group Harriers (it was 20p) and went to the YMCA on a Friday night and performed in the odd show.
We had horses and a pool on the farm so could ride and swim by aged five but we weren't well off.

TotteringByRosie · 07/03/2024 21:45

In the 80s - I did Brownies & Guides, Ballet, Horse Riding, Ice-Skating, Spanish, Drama, Piano, Orchestra, Tennis and Elocution.

My mum was highly aspirational and lived her life through me! I hated them all with a passion. The only activity I enjoyed was horse-riding which my mum did not approve of!

MissingMoominMamma · 07/03/2024 21:49

My son did swimming, football and St John’s Ambulance.

Untethered · 07/03/2024 21:49

Nothing for me. We were immigrants to London, and didn’t even know there were activities 😂

Our school didn’t have anything.

StaunchMomma · 07/03/2024 21:51

Yes but nothing attached to school, there were no 'after school club' things in the 80's (in my area, anyway).

Outside of school I did elocution and drama, music lessons, swimming and Brownies (for like 2 minutes because I hated it).

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/03/2024 21:52

Nope, nothing until I was early secondary age and then I'd go swimming once a week after school but just with a couple of local friends at the council pool, rather than a club.

Do kids still do elocution nowadays?

I haven't heard of any kids doing it but I loved it as a kid.

Tarsandcase · 07/03/2024 21:53

I'd have been happy with no extra activities but my mum insisted I had to do a couple. So I went through quite a few. Some lasted years and others only a couple of sessions.

Brownies
Swimming
Ballet
Gymnastics
Horse riding
Violin
Karate

I'd have loved to join a football club but there wasn't anything like that locally for girls.

unsync · 07/03/2024 21:53

70s/80s here. We could do one activity as well as Brownies/Guides (which was viewed as being character/skills building). My extra was horse riding, but in those days there wasn't all the kit they have now. All my kit was second hand and my Mother (teacher) also taught evening classes so that we could have our extra activity.

Racingadmin · 07/03/2024 21:56

Swimming lessons and brownies up until 9

Then youth club on a Friday night which has a disco , tuck shop and cool boys who taught us to smoke

I was down the pub at 14

IgnoranceNotOk · 07/03/2024 21:56

Tried piano lessons for a while, horse riding, judo but our main one was swimming and we had lessons most days after school and then would have regular competitions too.
