Landlord has placed bin shelter right outside our living room window :(

we live at the back of a massive house in a ground floor flat - there’s about 20 flats in total. The rent here isn’t cheap

There’s about 6 commercial waste bins and small recycling bins left outside our window. It absolutely stinks and is already overflowing. We only moved in last week and we weren’t told this was going to be built here! it is ridiculously close to our window - probably less than 5m

I’m so upset, the flat we’ve paid to live in has been riddled with problems - condemned boiler, leaky windows and now this.

is there anything I can do or do I have to just put up with this and move when our contract is up?

Is it through an agent, you need to contact them about the boiler, windows and bins. Shelter and environmental health can also advise you.

MidnightPatrol · 07/03/2024 11:09

Where were the bins previously?

User532 · 07/03/2024 11:12

It's an environmental health issue, contact the local council.

Ambergrain · 07/03/2024 11:13

Is it right outside or 5m away? I'm not trying to be difficult but it would help to know if you're unreasonable or not.

Spirallingdownwards · 07/03/2024 11:13

I am assuming you don't mean 5 metres though. Because that's quite a reasonable distance away.

Caroparo52 · 07/03/2024 11:15

I would speak up now to register your complaints and ask when action will be taken or compensation. Sorry to hear the issues. Could the bin shelter have doors or be relocated?

mrsm43s · 07/03/2024 12:52

Assuming you don't really mean 5 metres? As that's a very reasonable distance away, and I can't see how it would cause problems? 5cm or even 50cm I can see would be a problem.

In any case, any problems with the flat need to be reported to the letting agent. A condemned boiler seems like more of a problem to me!

TakeMe2Insanity · 07/03/2024 12:55

If its a block of 20 flats I presume it’s the freeholder who has done this not necessarily the landlord. They might not even know.

5m away from overflowing, stinking trash really isn't far at all. In warmer weather it would be unbearable.

TraitorsGate · 07/03/2024 12:59

Have they built a bin shed to keep the bins in. We had one near our bedroom window, it was lockable and part of the building but it did smell if it was overflowing or someone had left the door open.

It's over 16 feet away. Longer than most people's living rooms away!

Especially when the vermin come out and rampage through the bin e.g foxes.

I know how far 5m is, thanks, and as I said, 16 feet away from stinking, foul trash is no distance at all.

Why overflowing, stinking trash? I presume they have a regular bin collection?

Honestly, looking out of my window, every single house here keeps their bin less than 5m from their house.

msbevvy · 07/03/2024 13:16

They had this problem at my daughter's block of flats. They stopped using the bin room because someone complained about the noise.

A wooden shelter was built about 15 ft away from the entrance to the building and just below my daughter's window. It stank and attracted loads of flies in the summer. People had to keep their windows shut. Residents complained and a proper metal container was built in the car park, further away from the building.

The issue is 'overflowing and stinking' which needs to be raised with the council.

5m is probably further than most people are from their bins. Its much further than mine.

DrSpartacular · 07/03/2024 13:37

5m is plenty far enough, the problem is clearly your neighbours not disposing of their rubbish properly. Closed bins really shouldn't be a problem.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 07/03/2024 14:00

Yes most houses are less than 5m away from their bins. Which contain waste from one or two households. The OP is 5m away from commercial scale bins which contain the waste from 20 households. Most people would not like to be less than 5m away from this and look out of their front window onto this

But they have bigger bins, so the lids should shut tightly, so no smells, regardless of how many households use them. A shut bin 5 metres away isn't a problem, and won't smell.

If the lids are left open that needs to be raised with the management company if its a behavioural issue, or if the bins are too small or damaged, then with the council.

But bins, outside, 5 metres away, should not be a problem.
