AIBU to think it's weird that my husband refers to some of my female friends as 'birds'?

He normally does it when he's a bit annoyed at them.

And that even The Sun journalists wouldn't call women 'birds' anymore?

Everyone says it where I live - Cornwall. Along with cock, shag, lover. Normal to hear here 🤷🏻‍♀️

cock, shag, lover? Really?!

It’s just a word. I call women birds all the time.

Davros · 08/03/2024 00:10

I use the word "bird(s)" regularly. I'm a 60+ female Londoner

friendlyflicka · 08/03/2024 00:45

Mine does, occasionally. Very Essex upbringing and it is a term from his youth. Me and my daughters tease him when he uses it.

I say bird.

I'd say 'Is so and so's bird going so and so's wedding' or whatever.

It doesn't bother me if I'm referred to as bird either, or chick, or duck.

Same! I don't think it's a bad word to use. I could think of a lot worse lol 😂

Mopsybunny · 08/03/2024 01:23

Depends what normal is in his vocabulary. there’s more to worry about.

maybe you need a shorthand for his friends? The worms? As in What are you and the worms up to on your night out ?

Hahahaha love it.

LadyNijo · 08/03/2024 08:27

Has he arrived from the past in a particularly repellent time machine? Ugh.

When we have threads like this I always want to write one of those "Helpful tips for tourists" things " When visiting Glasgow, remember that "cunt" is a routine informal greeting" "It is always appropriate to address a group of women as "birds" or "chicks"."When being served in a shop in Cornwall it is customary to address a male assistant as "cock""

SomersetTart · 08/03/2024 09:41

I find it much weirder that he has cause to be annoyed at your friends. Why is that?

MammaTo · 08/03/2024 09:42

I’m from Liverpool and it’s used all the time. I don’t see it as offensive.

How often do males moan about being called cock though? Not much..
Id rather be called a bird than a cock! 🐓I don’t read too much into it. Unless it’s in vulgar taste in a sentence.

chocolatelips · 07/10/2024 08:11

Maybe alittle late in the day for this post but it might be that he is just used to calling them that.
I am not justifying it but just saying because my DH calls his female friends " lover" "beauty" "gorgeous" "babe" etc.
When I asked him, he said its words of endearment to his friends and that I should not have a problem with it.

We agreed that if he calls OW all those names, then he should just call me ( his wife )by my name.

Just make sure he respects you enough NOT to call you "bird"

CurlewKate · 07/10/2024 08:15

Oh, please! It's not dialect-it's sexism!

CurlewKate · 07/10/2024 08:16

Ah, shit. Archaeological thread again. Oh well, at least I said the same when I first posted!

I agree I think some people just want a reason to be mad and feel less then. Birds are beautiful creatures.

So are roosters (cocks) and in some places/contexts calling someone a cock is completely nonoffensive. In other circumstances it's definitely derogatory.

clarrylove · 07/10/2024 08:32

Used all the time in the south. Not offensive. Am female, I think actually the women use it more then the menfolk. Eg. if I bump into my friend's husband and we chat, I'd say 'how's your bird?'.

Clotheswoe · 11/10/2024 19:49

my husband often says, 'that comes from the minds of birds' - re: some event that he doesn't want to go to.
