To ask for help with my newborn?

DS is just over a week old and is FF (currently on C&G first infant milk). We have been using TT bottles and there were no issues initially, but for the past 2 days he has been really fussy and unsettled after a feed.

He brings wind up fine, but then afterwards he's wriggling around in pain, almost like he has bellyache.

I don't know what to do. Could it be the bottles or perhaps the formula?

Please any tips from anybody would be a godsend 🙏🏻

My niece was similar so my sister switched to a comfort formula and she was much more settled on that.

Can you ring your midwife and ask them to come and visit today? I did this when my baby was born last year and they were brilliant gave lots of advice for my situation and the reassurance that baby has been seen by them.

Sounds pretty normal, it can help to keep them upright after feeds for a while - also keep baby upright during the feed and the teat full of milk.

Does the formula have air bubbles? For example, if you use the perfect prep and then feed baby immediately there are a lot of bubbles which can cause extra wind.
If the bottle is left to settle it may help?

I've noticed it does seem no matter what air bubbles get inside the teats during feeding. Maybe they are too wide for DS if that makes sense?

I'm currently making up bottles using the kettle method and the bottle is left to cool down so I don't think that could be the issue 😓

I've found the Mam anti colic bottles to be really good. Stopping to burp half way through a feed seems to reduce discomfort too for my DS.

C and G is notorious for causing babies to be unsettled. Try Hipp Organic

PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon · 07/03/2024 10:06

Tbh at this age they're basically just a digestive system with a face. A brand new digestive system that's learning how to do it's thing!

This doesn't sound outside the realm of "normal" even though I know it's really tough when you're going through it! What comforts him? Have you tried popping him in a sling and just keeping him upright and close after feeds?

whatishappening1 · 07/03/2024 10:09

Is this happening after every feed?
Little one may just be taking some time to settle and it could be formula but I’d keep an eye on it. Things to look out for longer term could be tongue tie or CMPA as well as silent reflux.
A week to 2 weeks in, our normalish seeming baby turned into a screaming machine after every feed. She then started getting pimply rash all over her face. This went on for a long time, being advised colic etc and eventually CMPA.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 07/03/2024 10:13

@PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon I was just about to write the same.
Skin cuddles helped mine OP, obviously warm room and snuggled under a blanket whilst against you, but it seemed to calm a sore tummy with all of mine.

takealettermsjones · 07/03/2024 10:48

I had this with one of mine, I thought the wind was all up but it wasn't. I carried baby upright and walked up and down the stairs, it helped settle them (and helped me get some exercise 🤣)

stackhead · 07/03/2024 10:49

Infacol! And some anti colic bottles.

And stop to burp half way through the bottle.

mindutopia · 07/03/2024 11:07

I found that a bit of gripe water helped.

It may just be one of those things - they do go through unsettled phases and things then settle down. I would keep an eye on it.

BB2818 · 07/03/2024 12:41

Our almost 6 week old has been having similar issues. But BF. We found infacol didn’t work. We have just started using colief- which seems to be working. Like others have said up right after a feed.

When you make the formula do you shake? That can cause more air bubbles and as a result more wind. Try a swirling action with the bottle instead - if that makes sense?

It sounds like colic symptoms which are quite common until 3-4 months.
