To think he needs a tutor?

DS just finished his a level mocks and got two B's and a D in Maths...the school is fairly shocking and I've suggested he needs a tutor as we are now more than half way through the first year. He's hoping for a science degree at Russel group uni.

Yes to a tutor. We got one for my son in math and French. Made a big difference

Did he study for his mocks ? I would say that he needs a maths tutor at minimum but this needs to come from him not you.

@BoohooWoohoo He did revise. The teacher isn't a maths teacher...it's just a mess.

Needs to be a good personality/approach fit with your DC.

My son is in Year 12 studying computer science, maths and physics. Although CS was his first choice of A level subject he has not enjoyed it. I knew he was struggling so a D in his recent mock was not a surprise. Now he has come home with a D in physics also. He hasn’t had the maths result yet but he should have an A for that.
I feel like there should still be time for him to improve before the real thing but hard not to be disappointed as he did so well in GCSEs and as a person he is motivated by success not by failure.
Does anyone know how much improvement is likely between year 12 mocks and the real thing. I am also not sure what mocks are used for predicted grades in UCAS applications?

Yes get a tutor. They make so much difference. Just make sure the tutor is decent and has knowledge of the correct exam syllabus etc

Yes, get a tutor but make sure your son understands this is not a substitute for hard work. I have tutored maths one-to-one for 25 years. The students who do best prepare for our sessions by attempting work set at school, bringing specific questions/problems (which means we can work together to remedy gaps), and are prepared to follow up with further practice. Unfortunately, some students come completely unprepared, with the attitude that I will teach them everything they need to know to get a grade A in an hour a week.
