Car hit

My car was hit on a roundabout by a hgv as I was going straight on and thry came from left. No one hurt. Hgv drove off. Was on busy carriageway so I drove to somewhere I knew and called police and insurance company. Car is a write off. No dashcam. Police given time, location, description of vehicle. Said thry probably won't go further as I don't have details of other driver.

Has anyone had this happen before? What happens next?

You contact your insurance company

ancienticecream · 06/03/2024 15:45

Did you get anything about the HGV, even the company that was driving it?

I think the only thing you can do is contact your insurance company and ask online if there were any witnesses. You said you called them - what did they say?

Are you sure it's a write off if you drove it somewhere?

You need to speak to your insurance company about next steps.

Did you get to take photos or videos of it driving away? Did you see any cameras around like ring door bells etc? The police haven't got time for this sort of thing, you have to be your own detective on your own case sometimes. For now go through your insurance and then if you find any evidence you can go through civil proceedings to try and claim some money back later. For future reference lorries do often swing wide to make a turn so you do need to keep back and not go alongside.

Do I need to tell police its been deemed a write off?

The problem is that ANPR or doorbell footage of a lorry in that area at that time will only be circumstantial evidence. Direct evidence would be footage of the actual collision, or your car's paint (would require lab analysis, not just a visual colour match) on the lorry or vice versa. It's entirely possible that the lorry driver didn't even feel the collision. All that (and more) is why the police won't devote resource to it.
