Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:

Gen X, I whatsapp all the time and only videocall my mum and sister in law because they want to see my daughter, we live away from both families. I only make calls to my best friend and my aunt as said aunt only has a landline.

Can you have a word with my mum please? She raised me to be independent, with opinions, and to have enough confidence to stand by my opinions. Now she doesn't like it when my opinion is different from hers.

Mind you, this is the same woman who spent the first two years of my life teaching me to walk and talk, and since then tells me to sit down and shut up 🤣

This doesn’t make sense.

Your example only proved what @TheBraves said, that children learn in childhood and continue as adults. Like you did, your mother just didn’t like it when it backfired on her because you didn’t always agree.

Laiste · 06/03/2024 14:33

Baby Boomers UK (USA slightly different i think) are today between 60 and 78 aren't they?

What are the 7 generations UK?

  • Generation Alpha: 2013-2020.
  • Generation Z: 1997-2012.
  • Millennials: 1981-1996.
  • Generation X: 1965-1980.
  • Baby Boomers: 1946-1964.
  • Silent Generation:1928-1945.
RitaIncognita · 06/03/2024 14:34

You do realise boomers are age 70-80?

There are no 80 year old Baby Boomers yet. Birth years are 1946-1964, so 70s yes, and of course, there are lots in their 60s.

I meant that @TheBraves appears to be proud that her children are independent whereas my mum doesn't appear to be despite having raised us to be so. Hence asking TheBraves to have a word with my mum and let her know that it is a good thing to have independent thinking children.

TheBraves - sweeping assumption that you are female, apologies if not.

bombastix · 06/03/2024 14:35

Yes. It is deeply annoying.

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:29

I don't think ageist means what you think it does. It means "discriminating on the basis of age", not "noticing people of the same generation develop similar habits"

Ageist doesn't mean what YOU think it means; you are using the legal definition, ie. in the workplace.

Redmat · 06/03/2024 14:36

I'm a boomer ,don't do video calls and will have a mortgage until I'm 68 . Sorry to mess with the stereotype.

Allfur · 06/03/2024 14:36

Anyone, whatever age, facetiming anywhere near me, is deeply annoying

Allfortheloveofabiscuit · 06/03/2024 14:37

My dmum and dsis constantly send voice notes - I often cant listen to them for fear of whats in them while Im at work and college or with the kids around

WhiteLily1 · 06/03/2024 14:38

Not video calls so much but not being able to text and leave it at a text. They always have to call you. I don’t need to speak to you!! I’m seeing you tomorrow - a text will do just fine for arrangements!!
Also hate voice notes- I try to make one and my mind goes totally blank and no words form.
Im very early millennial

PostItInABook · 06/03/2024 14:38

What is the point of this thread?

Who honestly cares which method people choose to communicate?

People from all generations use different ways and methods to communicate. It’s almost as if people are different, with different experiences and preferences, and don’t fit into a neat generational box like buffoons such as the OP would try to have you believe.

Honestly, the absolute shite that is on here and that uselessly fills brain space is mad sometimes.

Coolblur · 06/03/2024 14:38

So is it only people aged 60+ that do this? If so I should have thought it would be easy to ignore as there can't be too many that age calling you that it's an actual problem to you. Or do you use the term ' 'boomer' to mean older than you? and is ridiculously immature and ignorant

SevenSeasOfRhye · 06/03/2024 14:38

Husband is a boomer and he's never made a video call in his life!

Wow. Always thought my mum was a boomer as she was born in 1945. According to your classification she`s of the silent generation. Have to google what that name means...

willWillSmithsmith · 06/03/2024 14:40

I’m 62 I would never video call unless it’s my sister and we need to discuss something important regarding parental care.

HopingForRainbow2021 · 06/03/2024 14:40

My Dad was a boomer and always video called where possible, even though we saw one another most days :)

Laiste · 06/03/2024 14:41

@Katiesaidthat - exactly the same here! My mum's that gen too and i didn't realise. Or knew what it means.

minipie · 06/03/2024 14:41

I think you mean the particular Boomers you know use video calling a lot

The ones I know don’t use it at all, they text or email.

My millenial sibling mostly voice calls (old school)

My Gen X friends mostly text or whatsapp. Except for the one who voice calls because she can’t find her glasses 😆

Everyone I know HATES voice notes

Goforitagain · 06/03/2024 14:42

66 here and never video called, not even DS

twingiraffes · 06/03/2024 14:42

YABU for using the offensive term 'boomer' to insult an entire section of the population.

Just stop it.

chattyness · 06/03/2024 14:42

boomer here I don't video call face time or whatsapp or any other kind of video app, urgh no thank you

MorningSunshineSparkles · 06/03/2024 14:43

You’d be fantastic at writing a book on how to insult multiple generations of people with the one paragraph OP, outstanding work.

btw I’m a millennial and much prefer video calling to either texting or voice notes (seriously fuck off with your voice notes no one wants to bloody listen to them!)

Eh? That’s pretty much the majority of people on here’s parents, aunts and uncles. So yes. They call a lot.
what a weird thing to say?

Goforitagain · 06/03/2024 14:44

It’s mainly young people that do this
