Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

Let me guess, you clog up threads with “not all men” too?

Never done that but I find stereotyping of any groups by age, sex, race, religion offensive.

Boomer is literally the name of the generation, like Millennial… which is also used in negative ways, as is GenZ. Never GenX… how do they always escape 🤣

Well no one really noticed us growing up ( latch key kids) Maybe we just don't invite attention ?

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/03/2024 18:45

The term is 'Baby Boomer' because we were conceived and born in a literal baby boom after the war - returning soldiers and increased standard of living etc. 'Boomer' on its own is always used in a patronising and derogatory way.

Yes we all know the term Baby Boomer. It’s not always used in a negative way, it’s just the name given to that particular generation. The term ‘millennial’ has been used by ‘Boomers’ for years in far more derogatory ways, including by those in the media.

This is what I think. I'm gen x. We just grew up eating whatever crappy delights Findus could offer, had a bloody great time in the 90's, and then carried on largely drama and blame free! We aren't sitting on houses we bought for £6k and we aren't complaining about not getting on the property ladder while daring to spend £3 on a latte!

Oakbeam · 06/03/2024 19:32

Neither are all boomers. My first house cost me over £200k

ProfessionalBuilding · 06/03/2024 19:37

“Boomers” has been used as shorthand for baby boomers for decades. I understand the phrase “Ok boomer” is used in a pejorative sense but there’s nothing wrong with using “boomer”.

Jom222 · 06/03/2024 19:43

not sure which is worse, the (incorrect) assumption that an entire generation does something OP dislikes or the way OP has dug in to defend and continue insulting others over their poor choice of language. 'sorry you're triggered' LOL that's a good one OP!

idk, I'm a boomer who has never facetimed nor do any of the boomers I know but we must all be in the minority per OP

tchotchke · 06/03/2024 19:53

As a Gen X I actively avoid video call especially, but also telephone calls. Just WhatsApp me. I’ll bet back to you.

PomPomSugar · 06/03/2024 19:53

Older Millennial here…who’s phone has been on silent since 2008…

sleekcat · 06/03/2024 19:53

My Gen Z son video calls me most of the time. I do the same to him, but only because it's nice to see him. I don't video call anyone else. Gen X here. We don't have any true Boomers in the family. My parents are the nearest, slightly older, and they'd never dream of it.

DetOliviaBenson · 06/03/2024 19:54

Boomer and millennial IME. My mum (boomer) and DSD (millennial) do this all the bloody time! I (gen X) hate video calling! Funnily enough both dds (gen Z) hate video calling too.

mylovelytulips · 06/03/2024 19:57

I am Gen x and i hve not noticed this at all. I am finding my near sight is starting to get worse, so maybe i will stop messaging and start calling more?? Definitely wont be videocalling though

Most GenXers I know have done very well for themselves, particularly by flipping and making money from property. GenX managed to reach adulthood before the economy disintegrated, so they just flew under the radar with no major world dramas

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 14:09

I'm sorry if "Baby Boomers" feel sensitive about being identified by their generation, its not a problem that seems to affect ant other generation, we have plenty of people on here happily stating they are Gen X, Gen Z or millennial...

Not what you said though. You used the shortened and oft used as a slur version.

Livelovebehappy · 06/03/2024 20:15

When I see a post about ‘boomers’, there’s always an under-current of bitterness, and unhappiness within the poster’s life. It’s all about comparison, and comparison is the thief of joy.

augustusglupe · 06/03/2024 20:29

God no!! I’m 59 and I hate being FaceTimed/videoed.
i just like a nice old fashioned phone call where I don’t need to look at anyone nor them me 🤷🏻‍♀️
DD is a millennial and she videos and does the Instagram stories thing a lot.
Really don’t think it’s an older person thing.

Yep, my tiny 1 bed flat cost £60k when I bought it. My parents gave me the £6k deposit and it doubled in price by the time I sold it 10 years later. That's been the basis of all my houses since. None have appreciated as much. My kids will never be able to do that. We will never be able to give them a 10% deposit for a start. It will be nearly 30k each.

SomersetTart · 06/03/2024 20:31

OP said something provocative and destined to upset us.
Then told us we were 'being sensitive' and 'triggered'.

If OP was a poster's DP we'd be saying LTB.

Owl55 · 06/03/2024 20:35

Yes I video call all the time , my daughter answers but Grandaughter rarely😂😂

ProfessionalBuilding · 06/03/2024 20:44

Although it does tally with my extremely limited personal experience, I think your observation is wrong, OP.

By demographics, older people are less likely to make video calls (globally and in the UK).

Having seen years of older people moaning about millennials this, millennials that (including large sections of the press), this new, widespread whining about the use of the word “boomers” is quite something.

Victim blaming rubbish.

It's usually factually incorrect generalisation to boot.

By SOME boomers. So the entire generation is fair game, eh?

Onelifeonly · 06/03/2024 21:24

You can't make generalisations. Technically I'm a 'boomer' (which has become a very dismissive term btw, akin to 'old fogey'). I loathe video calls. Only tolerated them for social reasons during the covid restrictions. And now only use them for remote work meetings. My Gen Z children love them though.
