Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

As a Gen X I don't see the problem..., just don't answer?

Dotjones · 06/03/2024 12:27

Not in my experience, generally it's only young people who want video calls, older people dislike them intently.

Mademetoxic · 06/03/2024 12:27

That's a bit ageist isn't it.

BeaRF75 · 06/03/2024 12:28

I think I am probably a "boomer". I have never Facetimed or video called anyone in my life, and I have no intention of ever doing so. It's a ghastly invention. So we're not all the same, OP!

BMW6 · 06/03/2024 12:29

Nor me. Never taken a selfie either.

I don't think ageist means what you think it does. It means "discriminating on the basis of age", not "noticing people of the same generation develop similar habits"

Nope. I'm a millennial and I'm the one video calling my mum so she can see her grandchildren. She never calls me actually, but if she did it would be a normal phone call

Limbo2 · 06/03/2024 12:30

I'm 42, not a fan of video calls but the two people who try it most are my mum (57) and stepdaughter (23). I don't really see it is an age thing

ApolloandDaphne · 06/03/2024 12:30

Boomer here. Never video call. Never call at all really. I use WhatsApp.

OhmygodDont · 06/03/2024 12:31

In-laws can’t go on holiday without at least one video call per week. Drives me bonkers.

What happened to being away to be away and a phone call meant shit had hit the fan. Now it’s just random video calls about absolute bollocks. While I try and stay out of the cameras eye.

PietariKontio · 06/03/2024 12:31

I'm borderline Gen X/Boomer, I would prefer text/email -> video call -> last of all phonecall.

Generalising thru generational age (old or young) is just lazy stereotyping

LoobyDop · 06/03/2024 12:32

Video calls have grown on me, but you need to give people notice. I never pick them up if I’m not expecting them. Gen X.

Boomer my god do older people not get a minutes peace!

Gatehouse77 · 06/03/2024 12:33

Sweeping generalisation!

I don’t know anyone who video calls unless it’s about something specific, like options in shop for them to choose. Or because it’s family who haven’t physically seen each other for a long time.

From any age group!

jeaux90 · 06/03/2024 12:33

Dear Millennial, any boomers using tech is a bonus in my opinion, it means we they will adopt technology efficiencies as part of the aging population. Surely as part of the generation who were the first to grow up with the internet you should be embracing it. Best regards Gen X

My boomer mum would be mortified if I video called, what if she hadn't brushed her hair yet or was in housework clothes.
I did arrange to video call during lockdown so the children who were young could see her but it was always pre-arranged and very staged.

BoohooWoohoo · 06/03/2024 12:34

I’m gen X and happy to receive video/phone calls, texts or voice notes from my kids.

I think you’re being a bit mean (ageist) It’s nice yo look at the face of the person that you’re speaking to do you can pretend that you’re chatting in person.

Droolylabradors · 06/03/2024 12:34

I'm late gen x. Don't video call, don't phone anyone if I can help it.

Prefer email.

I communicate with parents (boomers) via WhatsApp.

Don't understand the millennial voice note obsession!!

nah its ageist bollocks with no purpose but to talk about older people than you.

fakeprofile · 06/03/2024 12:35

Very odd post, not sure what this has to do with age or generation! I’m a millennial and video call my parents all the time, while they usually voice call. Boomers (and millennials) aren’t all a homogenous mass.

Guilty as charged, voice notes are the best!!!

My boomer parents never ever face time me. We phone each other or use messenger. It's my 19yo who loves a face time..

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 06/03/2024 12:35

No but I am getting sick of people walking around the supermarket on video calls. Usually women aged between mid 20s and late 30s

WasntExpectingSunshine · 06/03/2024 12:36

It’s true in my family but I don’t know if it’s true in general. I wouldn’t call it an obsession, they just use video call in place of a phone call. Does it matter? You do know you can ignore video calls, phone calls, texts etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️
