To be able to possibly change my walk?

I'm old and a little bit chubby.

I'm trying to go through a glow up, reinvention.

I bit obsessively watch myself on our Ring camera and despite efforts to lose weight, I still walk old and heavy footed.

Can I change?

I'd like to embrace the Gazelle in me.

I was overweight from late teens, lost 150lb and am 56 now.

Is it too late? 😭

Congrats on the weight loss and, no, you're not old!!

And step away from the Ring camera. Look at the sky, the trees and the birds instead...

Are you hypermobile? I am and since being fitted with made for me insoles my gait has completely changed- my ankles were rolling (even in boots) and I walked very heavily as all my joints were out of whack. Since getting my insoles (nhs) I stand straighter, walk more lightly and have so much less pain as well!

I don't think walking in a heavy-footed way has much, if anything, to do with weight. For instance, we live in a creaky old house, and I definitely move more lightly than visitors, just because otherwise every step is like a symphony creaking.

Amusingly, I noticed, when she visited for the first time since we'd moved in, that a tall, solidly-built friend also moved very lightly, and she confirmed she'd grown up in an dilapidated old house in which, if you stomped around upstairs, bits of plaster would fall off the downstairs ceilings!

I'm always surprised at how awful my walk looks when I see myself on our CCTV.

I don't know , my sister has lost 9 stone and still has bow legs left over from all that weight and is fairly heavy footed and wide footed too.

Worth a try though with effort .
As an aside those cameras are mean !

I agree - I tiptoe round the house compared to my kids (even when they were tiny) - because I spent my childhood with my dad yelling 'what are you, a fairy elephant' if any of us ran down the stairs/thumped around while walking upstairs :)

Thinking about it, the years I spent wearing flipflops in a hot country helped as well I think, because you do walk differently in them compared to trainers - it's much more on the toes than thumping your heel down.

Yoga or Pilates is good for core and posture, that might help.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2024 09:48

I agree with looking at your footwear and seeing if you need more arch support.

It's not too late at all, but you may need to do some exercises to work on your posture.

Keep your shoulders back, chest out, head up. Don't allow your weight to just fall onto your foot as you step forward, make a conscious effort to control the movement.

BarrelOfOtters · 06/03/2024 10:00

I found Pilates really helped, I'd starting walking like a duck. I know walk less like a duck.
