Personal allowance frozen - yet 2p off National Insurance

MikeRafone · 06/03/2024 08:56

AIBU to think that instead of reducing the tax on NI that the personal allowance raising a couple of hundred pounds would be better for less well of families and pensioners?

PA is frozen until 2028 whilst the last budget knocked off 2p on NI and suggested the same will happen today another 2p

whilst income tax will rise for many as NMW rises in April by £1.01

AIBU no PA shouldn't rise and 2p is ok of NI
YANBU PA should rise and leave NI as it is

@taxguru £200 is minimal when the price of everything is increasing.

PawsisShady · 06/03/2024 15:08

@taxguru come on, that is minimal
It's £16pm!

PawsisShady · 06/03/2024 15:10

It's ridiculous how people can agree that people on 50-100k are struggling but then say £200 a year isn't minimal
It doesn't make sense

PawsisShady · 06/03/2024 10:16

Why is there such a presumption that lower earners get benefits? I'm not the lowest earner out there but I do get min wage so I'm not a high earner in any way
No benefits. I get 25% off my council tax

It's just really fucking irritating because someone now will ask if I have DC, and the people who are single and don't have children are totally forgotten about like we can live off fresh air when we are paying everything alone

And the 25% off Council Tax is because you're single - you'd still get it if you were on £50k a year. There's sod all available in benefits to low paid people who happen to be single.

BenefitWaffle · 06/03/2024 15:30

Well off people always think low earners get benefits. In reality if you are working, and have no childcare costs - children grown up, have teenagers, or no children - then you will either get no benefits or minimal benefits. The exception is if you are on legacy benefits, benefits used to be more generous.
If or your family have a serious disability you may get PIP or DLA, but this is not dependent on income. You can have a £250k a year household income and still get PIP or DLA.

BenefitWaffle · 06/03/2024 15:32

And I agree an income of £100k is not enough, but £4 a week extra is supposed to be something to celebrate. Bloody ridiculous. The extra £4 a week I will get is very minimal. It does not even cover the rising cost of basic living. I am getting poorer all the time.

MikeRafone · 06/03/2024 15:38

The two NIC cuts of 2% each will save you £200 per year on that wage. That's not "minimal".

on £35k it'll save £900

yet people are on MN complaining that £50k isn't enough to live on...

It’s £680 on £35k according to my calculator.

He's forgotten that a lot of Tory voters are pensioners, good luck when the election finally gets called.

BIossomtoes · 06/03/2024 15:46

I think he might have realised that a lot of those pensioners have no intention of voting Tory in the next election. They’re casting around for younger votes now.

sorry, I saw this elsewhere and didn't check it, its still a lot more though

whereas had £200 been added to the income tax PA it would be £200 across the board

It’s not an election winner, but might pacify a few.🙄

Yeah, I think the Tories will get bitten on the bum now.😉

not as much as those on higher incomes

And? God the contempt against higher earners on these threads is getting so tedious.

No contempt, but more there's little to no need to give financial breaks to people on high salaries.

Buuty · 06/03/2024 16:52

As always the changes benefit those on higher incomes.

The NI cut benefits everyone on PAYE under pension age.

ChatBFP · 06/03/2024 16:54

To be honest, I think that freezing the thresholds has only put us back where we were before George Osborne increased them, in fact, not even that given that back in 2010 the tax free personal allowance was £6750. Previously, the tories increased thresholds and but didn't cut rates and now it's the opposite. It would be great to avoid all this tinkering, frankly.

This will be very unpopular, but I'd have preferred (despite personally paying more tax) lower thresholds since 2010 and less austerity, more investment, less borrowing, no stupid cliff edges at £50k and £100k. More simplicity, basically.

Danikm151 · 06/03/2024 16:54

The NI cut will benefit those earning between £25k and £50k apparently.

ChatBFP · 06/03/2024 16:57

(But I think that cutting NI is better personally, because pensioners have done relatively far better than the average working person over the last 10 years. This is not about me denying pensioner poverty - and there should be pension credit to alleviate that - or hating on pensioners, but the ratio of working people to pensioners is dropping off a cliff, so we need to try to incentivise work and keep pensioner benefits only to what is affordable otherwise the country will be bankrupt)

BIossomtoes · 06/03/2024 16:58

Danikm151 · 06/03/2024 16:54

That’s not quite right. It will benefit everyone on earnings up to £50k, at which point NI contributions already fall to 2%.

Elphame · 06/03/2024 17:02

Nice "furniture store sale" tactic by Hunt. Put NI up and then as that comes into force, cut it and claim that workers will be better off...

mitogoshi · 06/03/2024 17:04

I don't agree with the 2p because it benefits those on higher (middle) incomes more, some of us don't earn enough to pay much ni! Far better to help families and others on lower incomes, perhaps raise the threshold for free school meals

You start paying on an income of more than £242 a week so the vast majority of workers will benefit.

mitogoshi · 06/03/2024 17:08

@PawsisShady

I don't get any help at all, ok my dp earns well but we have independent finances. There's a presumption above that low income equals benefits which it doesn't mean! Some of us are doing very much needed jobs working with the most disadvantaged in society!
