The 2p tax cut

emmlou85 · 06/03/2024 07:50

Aibu to think this is a total waste of time. I will not notice if 2p is cut off my tax but cumulatively 2p off everyone paying tax is huge reduction. I've never understood these minute reductions when 2p won't make an individual difference to anyone.

It wouldn't make me vote for this party as I think it's just pointless and our services need this money. I can live without 2p.

The recent 2% cut in the NI rate meant I take home around £40 more pm, add another similar cut in and this will double, so it's far from unnoticable.

Cuts in NI rate are an interesting strategy for the Tories because their core voters, people above state pension age, don't pay NI, so won't benefit from this. Are they at risk of alienating some of their most loyal supporters?

McPancreas · 06/03/2024 08:27

They know they won’t win the next election and this is purely to damage the incoming government.

Conservatives have been burning public services for over a decade and this is just the equivalent of an arsonist leaving an lpg cylinder in the building for good measure.

As Rishi has already shown they will be fanning the flames of populist anger (farmers blocking roads etc) whilst in opposition too.

Great times to come

It won't get much support from voters , it won't help people much

but it will make life harder for the next government with less revenue and a need to increase taxes quickly

It's spite not support

I agree.

I'm quite surprised it's an NI cut, not a tax cut though. The Tories generally court the grey vote. Are they so complacent that pensioners will vote for them that they think it won't make a difference?

Mind you, I'm a pensioner, I've never voted Tory and never will.

soupfiend · 06/03/2024 08:29

Its madness.

We need to be paying more tax and NI in this country, there are huge swathes of earners who pay no tax at all.

Our country is ruined anyway.

Igneococcus · 06/03/2024 08:30

I'm quite surprised it's an NI cut, not a tax cut though.

A cut in NI will also apply to Scottish taxpayers, a tax cut wouldn't.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 06/03/2024 08:31

Whilst I understand that cutting NI is cheaper than cutting the same in tax, since it doesn't benefit those who are retired, I also wonder whether long-term there is a plan to link this to state pension.

State pension is unaffordable for the state with an ageing population, but people believe they are entitled to it because 'I've paid NI' (even though NI is just a tax by another name, it doesn't go into a specific pensions pot).

So if NI is cut, state pensions can be cut with the justification. 'well you benefited from significant reductions in NI'.

Or maybe I'm just a cynic

@emmlou85 your national insurance comes off before your wages are taxed so you could be paying marginally more in tax

This isn’t true. Your tax won’t go up as a result of the NI cut.

Runnerduck34 · 06/03/2024 08:32

I'd forgo the 2p cut for better nhs, schools and public services.
I didnt feel benefit of last 2p cut but I do feel the pain of lack of funding for SEN education and long waits for CAMHS and NHS
The country is on its knees.
This is bribery for votes
And to rain on labours parade making it so much harder for them to pay for their budget proposals if/ when they win the next election .

@emmlou85 your national insurance comes off before your wages are taxed so you could be paying marginally more in tax

That is not true. Your gross earnings will stay the same therefore your tax will stay the same.

Caterina99 · 06/03/2024 09:12

As a low earner it doesn’t make much difference to me really (£5 difference in my pay with last cut). I appreciate I pay v little tax or NI anyway, which is why.

Public services are already stretched to the max. So why are we now reducing how much money they get?

I do understand that this is pitched as a way to reward workers as only employment income attracts NI.

There’s a suggestion there’ll be an additional surprise come the announcement

Myasylum · 06/03/2024 10:30

So many people are financially fucked though, like me at the moment, that any additional income is really welcome.

When I was comfortable I could afford to parade on principle and say I wanted higher tax to pay for public services, but now I am down to not being able to meet basics, I am like ‘fuck it, I just need more money in my pocket now’. And yes, and extra £400 a year ( I think they said on the radio) would be very welcome. That is a noticeable amount when you are on your arse.

Thisilldo · 06/03/2024 12:35

I completely agree Myaslum.

The people going on about public services are usually the ones that pay the least and take the most. Us that work our backsides off to pay mortgages, school fees, child care are the ones that are permanently screwed over.

Im sick oh hearing about the NHS. I care about putting food on my table.
