To ask if you had a child through ICSI...

..are there any development/behavioural/ other issues they have?

(Posting for traffic here)

It is looking like my only chance to have a child with my partner will be use of ICSI due to his sperm parameters and other factors. Apparently there are higher risks of behavioural or developmental disorders but as children born from this method are only teenagers, there isn't enough data... I'm just wondering how widespread this is and why I hadn't heard more about this before as it's probably fairly common now with IVF?

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has gone down this path and is willing to share their experiences?

TIA

ICSI 5 year old girl - developing normally, happy and healthy, no concerns at all.

I had no idea this was a thing. The doctor who recommended ICSI over conventional IVF didn’t say anything about an increased risk.

My ICSI baby is a teenager now, doing really well at grammar school, top 5 in her class. Some ND traits, but then so do I, so does DH. No developmental issues and she's taller and stronger than I am. Straightforward pregnancy as well.

A relative was born as a result of ICSI in 1994. Now coming up to her 30th birthday she is a stunning, intelligent young lady with no health issues .

My dd was normal ivf and has been fine.

my DS is ICSI and has multiple issues (delay, growth issues, digestive issues) but was also a bit prem and had two placental ablations. So no determinative cause!

I would crack on OP and try not to worry (easy to say I know!)

My strapping 6ft 15 year old was born from ICSI, no issues whatsoever and brings joy to my life every day. Good luck ❤️

We have two daughters - one ICSI (8) and one IVF (7). They’re both amazing kids and with no issues at all.

Thanks

The info re risks on ICSI was on HFEA website- https://www.hfea.gov.uk/treatments/explore-all-treatments/intracytoplasmic-sperm-injection-icsi/

Copied and pasted:

It has been suggested that the use of ICSI may also be associated with long-term health issues for the children born. However, we cannot prove this either way until we have more conclusive evidence.
Risks that may be associated with ICSI include:

  • certain genetic and developmental defects in a very small number of children born using this treatment; however, problems that have been linked with ICSI may have been caused by the underlying infertility, rather than the treatment itself
  • the possibility that a boy conceived as a result of ICSI may inherit his father’s, or donor's, infertility (it is too early to know if this is the case, as the oldest boys born from ICSI are still in their teens). However, where there is a clearly defined genetic cause of male infertility, particularly if it is associated with the Y chromosome, it is highly likely that male offspring will inherit their father’s, or donor's, infertility.

That data is old. My oldest icsi boy is 22 and conceived after 5 years of trying via icsi, which was already an established method when we started, so some must be nearly 30 now.

Identical twin boys aged 15 via ICSI. Healthy, beautiful, clever, delightful. A blessing like sunshine in our lives that would only have happened by this technique.
Good luck@namechangingtable with whatever you decide.

thank you so much for the balanced responses.. something I will continue to consider but ultimately I think we'll go ahead with ICSI

3 ICSI kids here (2 are twins). All late teens. All absolutely fine (other than the normal childhood/teenage issues occasionally).

Our chances of conceiving without ICSI would have been somewhere between very slim and non-existent; I'm very, very grateful it was a possibility.
