To think school as a bit unfair

School wasnt happy that my daughter was 30 minutes late for school this morning. She has never had a day off or been late once in the past. I was in traffic for 2 hours to drop my son off at nursery, I did contemplate turning back to take my daughter first but I would have been even more late for work!

Not sure what you think is unreasonable given there were no consequences and the receptionist didn’t say anything! It sounds like you had a stressful morning, maybe you were a bit flustered when you finally got there and that made you feel a bit sensitive?

More than likely! haha

Try a different route tomorrow perhaps.

RoseNy · 05/03/2024 14:26

What's the issue? So what if they were not happy. You made a choice.

Everleigh13 · 05/03/2024 14:29

You may be projecting your own frustration and disappointment onto the receptionist. She might have other things going on that meant her attitude was as it was.

lanthanum · 05/03/2024 14:34

If the lights affected a lot of people she was probably having a bad morning.
Half an hour late may mean dinner orders have gone in, and they may well have started on following up that morning's unexplained absences, so been trying to call you.
Obviously there wasn't much you could do - stopping to call them would just have delayed things further.
What won't go down well is if the same happens tomorrow!

Iwasafool · 05/03/2024 14:34

I'm just amazed that you were sitting in traffic for 2 hrs and your DD was only 30 minutes later for school.

YouWat · 05/03/2024 14:34

Ive got such a bad migraine as I got myself so worked up.

We set off at 7:30 as that road is notoriously bad on a normal day, I drop my son off at nursery then go to school and make it home for 9am

Honestly, I think that shows that it’s all coming from your feelings, and school weren’t “unfair” at all.

You were late, no big deal, the receptionist didn’t have time to soothe you with platitudes about it (and even if they had time, they shouldn’t really have to). Possibly as you were obviously late getting back for work you gave off a “no time to talk” vibe anyway.

If you want to lighten the mood for yourself, try watching some of the School Receptionist clips in Motherland, and have a laugh about it!

Is it really this once incident, or is it the straw breaking the camel’s back, with concerns over the lengthy double school run?

Yes I am so fed up with driving out of my way to nursery but they do not have school nurseries in my area so I kept DS at the private nursery he was already at as he was settled there and to avoid moving him to another nursery and then moving him again to reception. Roll on September!

I get it. A little bit of empathy from the office staff goes a long way. It really doesn't take much to acknowledge how stressful it must have been for someone to be stuck in traffic for that long.

I don't think your expectations were unreasonable, doesn't sound like she was particularly friendly and in your already fragile state you probably felt it more!

Sorry it's been such a stressful day, hope it improves!

I am trying to cut own on wine too. I think it might be needed tonight!

Luckily O am not working tomorrow so I will do the school drop off first, there isnt another route really without going all the way around, the traffic on the motorway the other way is always terrible so I dont think it would be a good idea to try that way.

Isn’t the point of primary school that it’s in walking distance?

It isnt the school run that is the issue, its nursery

Really? You were late. The receptionist is not there to ease your feelings about it and you are massively over reacting to a non event.

! Ah well the point of nursery is to stick you in high road traffic, usually in the opposite direction of where you want to be 🤢

Nursery used to be very close to where I previously lived, I moved DD's school when we moved areas but didnt want to disrupt my son as it took him so long to settleinto nursery

You were late. The receptionist wasn’t warm and fuzzy about it as she didn’t care(why would she?It wasn’t her child) and was probably thinking about other stuff. You are now suffering from a headache and feeling really stressed. This isn’t the kind of thing most people would really worry about beyond possibly thinking that the receptionist was a bit cheerless.

Just to have had a better attitude

You'll need to be far more specific? She didn't say anything, but had the wrong attitude 😵‍💫

I assume you did at least ring the school to let them know of the issue and give them an ETA ? My childrens' school were always fine as long as you did this. And there were usually other parents in the same position if it was a traffic issue. Otherwise how do they know whether she is just going to be a few minutes late or not coming in at all ?

I actually wouldn’t do this as I don’t take or make any calls while driving.

My work actually has a policy that you’re not even to use hands free in a journey to or from work.

Op I get it. They should be concerned with piss takers but not genuine people who have had some bad luck one day. I was hours late for work one day because of getting stuck on the motorway for hours when someone crashed after driving the wrong way into head-on traffic. My boss didn’t care as I didn’t regularly take the piss. Should be the same with schools.

Testina · 05/03/2024 21:02

“They should be concerned with piss takers but not genuine people who have had some bad luck one day.”

But they weren’t concerned, nobody said anything.

The journey sounds terrible, I think I'd keep him off tomorrow rather than have a 2 hr journey in the morning and would it be the same in the afternoon?

Shinyandnew1 · 05/03/2024 21:14

What did the receptionist actually say?
