Thanks for all the responses. We have been before but many years ago and just to Taba to a resort pre kids. DH is not a great one for lying on a lounger and wants more adventure but lots of good advice on here. Kids are well travelled in Turkey Jordan etc but I guess recent events in the world have made me more anxious. Eg I loved Jordan but wouldn’t go at the moment!

Went to Egypt 4 times last year and will be there 3 times this year.

I was last in Cairo in 2022 and would happily go back any time. We have stayed in both 5 and 3 star properties in Cairo and had a lovely time at both. One of my best friends in the world is a Cairo guide for Abercrombie and Kent and nothing has changed there. Only reason I haven’t been back lately is because GEM hasn’t opened yet.

Go. You won’t regret it.

I lived in Cairo for a year, I never got ill once, and I used the water to brush my teeth etc. I suppose some people are more sensitive than others. I've only ever been ill in South America and I've been to a lot of places. Cairo is okay. The pyramids can get a bit hectic. I avoided them close up as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of the men selling stuff etc. I sat in the Marriot hotel and viewed them from afar with a glass of wine. I was with my son, who was 13. The downsides are the noise, the smoking everywhere, the traffic, the lack of decent bars. It's okay. I wouldn't rush back.

I would personally look at the big chain hotels OP. I have been to Sharm twice (Rixos), the Hilton (Luxor) and a day trip to Cairo. Was hassled in Cairo (not sexually).

The problem with those kinds of hotels is that the money goes to a big multinational corporation.

If you stay in a budget hotel, not only do you save a load of money, all of the money that you do spend will go into the local economy to support local people.

We stayed in basic places in Egypt without getting food poisoning or having any safety problems.
