Kids activity groups and ratios

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is ok.

DD is 4, she goes to rainbows, they give 8 places per school year (which is really not enough) and move up on the school year (so some of the girls are nearly 8 by the time they leave rainbows as rainbows cover Reception to Y2), I'm pretty sure this isn't the norm but what can you do. The same lady runs rainbows, brownies and the local Sunday school.

Either way my issue is ratios, for the 24 kids, their are 2 adults. I worry this isn't close to enough? They usually have a DofE teen volunteering too.
It's a great group, she works through loads with them all and DD loves it.

DD also goes to Sunday school, it's about 30 kids, 2-11 and here they have 3 adults.

Dd does ballet and that's only 10-12 kids per class and the teacher has an assistant.

AIBU to wonder what normal ratios are for these and be worried that they aren't enough for some? Who do I approach about this?

so 12 per adult?

School? presumably she’s in a class of 33 with a teacher and possibly a TA?

Skyblue92 · 04/03/2024 14:58

OP they are breaking girl guiding guidelines. If they have 24 kids they need 5 adults. 1 adult for every 5 at Rainbows with a minimum of 2 adults. I assume they are just doing the 2 adults. Google adult to child ratios guiding and then quote that to them or go to their district/county.

ETA: this is outside of meeting place. Inside seems to be at least two. S

im in scouting at we have to obey the strict ratios

fruity81 · 04/03/2024 14:59

and there’s no “norm” to how individual rainbow groups plan joining process

Yes I know but I imagine teachers are higher qualified than some volunteers?
Some people have told me the leader used to be a primary teacher but stopped when she had her own kids but I don't know this for sure.

Rainbows and Brownies There should be a minimum of 2 adults on site during normal unit meetings at your usual meeting place.

Nohousemove · 04/03/2024 15:00

2 of those organisations are volunteer led. I’m sure they will be happy for another volunteer.

Skyblue92 · 04/03/2024 15:00

Ignore my post that’s outside of meeting place

I'm not sure I'd be very good at it - I'm not great with kids who aren't my own!!

no I’m not. I admit I read outdoors and not indoors re read but I imagine that’s hard for you

fruity81 · 04/03/2024 15:06

We have adult to child ratios that are mandatory forcertain activities, but unit meetings are more flexible.

so I made a bloody mistake. Jesus bloody Christ.

Adult to child ratios

Avoid any safety issues by having the right number of adults present at your meeting

fruity81 · 04/03/2024 15:09

and you.don’t seem to know scouts ratios also

Indoors: Minimum of two adults present.

Outdoor activities held away from the usual meeting place: One adult to eight Cubs, plus the leader in charge. Minimum of two adults present.

So you're worried that there aren't enough adults for the group, but at the same time think that taking 8 new girls per year is not enough? How do you propose to solve this?

As has already been said, the minimum is 2 adults for normal unit meetings - the ratio is different for going on trips etc. So there's nothing you've said that she's doing wrong.

I'm a Brownie leader and could pretty much fill an entire new unit from my waiting list of girls who are already 7+. But there just aren't the volunteers to do it.

and for scouts

outdoor activities would mean 3 plus leader

So you also got Scouts outdoor wrong 🤷‍♀️

i only mention scouting abide my strict ratios which we do have especially for squirrels but you clearly can’t handle that I apologised for reading the fucking wrong bit.

fruity81 · 04/03/2024 15:13

OP just have a word with the leaders. If anything like my children’s… they’re lovely and won’t take this remotely as anything other than a concerned parent

fruity81 · 04/03/2024 15:14

that I apologised for reading the fucking wrong bit.

thank you and i Jesus bloody christ accept

PuttingDownRoots · 04/03/2024 15:15

Squirrels would be the best comparison for rainbows, which is three adults. Not Cubs!

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 04/03/2024 17:01

The woman is running three children's groups voluntary and clearly is meeting the minimum ratios, and you want to complain because you do not like the joining process?
She is giving up an enormous amount of time, please at least thank her.
