Gave address to Facebook scammer

Just that really. I thought it was a genuine buyer, I’ve got a large item for sale, arranged time for them to collect, gave my address, and then it transpired they were a scammer.

Now I am panicking that I’ve given my address to some nutcase! I’ve sold a million things on Facebook marketplace before and had nothing like this happen before.

I did the same thing OP. In fact that was the last time I attempted to sell anything on FB. Just give things to charity now as it's not worth the stress.

However, I don't think they will be able to do much with just your address. It's horrible to think they know where you live but they were probably after you giving them some money and will just move on!

I don't think they will do much with it. Did they ask for it so 'a courier' could come? Once they get no money out of you they will drop it. For all you know they are sitting on their couch in a tiny town in Alaska so unlikely to show up at your front door

Thank you that’s put my mind at rest!

I assumed as they wanted to collect it must be someone local so my mind has been in overdrive, but as you said they might not even be in the UK!

Yes they ended up saying they couldn’t collect so would arrange a courier

I would make sure you remove your DOB from your facebook. If they have your full name, DOB and address, there is a potential for identity theft. Otherwise, I think the PP is right. Most likely it is a chap in Nigeria just trying to get you to transfer him money. He is unlikely to bother travelling to visit you.

Tip for future: give the post code/street addresses and ask them to message when they're there and you will come out with the item.

This is really good advice, thank you!

I’ve always considered myself to be pretty scam aware so am really annoyed with myself 😬

I've done the same thing - nothing seemed to happen. I wouldn't worry - that info is pretty much available to everyone anyway.

I check to make sure they've got a local profile now before engaging.

If someone comes knocking on your door, just deny all knowledge and suggest that maybe someone on facebook is using your address instead of their own.
