To ask when you drive after a C - section?

I'm 5 days PP and recovering well. I'm obviously not going to drive yet as it's way too soon and I still have some pain but just wondering when others started driving again after their CS?

My DH is due to return to work in 2 weeks so ideally I would need to start driving by then so I can drop DS off at school.

I hear 6 weeks mentioned a lot but does anybody really wait that long? 😬

I was given the all clear by my GP at 2 weeks PP

Although I was fine 2 days after the op

It’s worth asking your insurers as they’ll have different policies, some specify 6 weeks, some say until cleared by a doctor etc.

I drove about 2 weeks after mine due to exh being unable to drive due to being newly diagnosed with MS. As long as you can do an emergency stop you are OK. I rang my insurance company to check & they weren't interested.

think it’s an urban myth now on insurers on the six weeks, mine said when I felt safe to do so. There is no arbitrary line.

with modern cars and power steering it is usually fine quite quickly. I was about 3 weeks. Just trust your own judgement.

3 days after the op.
Husband doesn't drive and with an older child in school life had to go on.

I did after 2, I was fine and also didn't have a lot of choice. Just ease back into it.

It’s not a myth.

Some insurers do still require 6 weeks, not many but some do.

Doctor told me six weeks. I drove the day before that and was really sore afterwards.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 04/03/2024 13:30

It was two weeks with one of my c sections but I can't remember the other...wouldn't have been 6 weeks though. Our insurance company was fine with it

RebeccaCloud9 · 04/03/2024 13:46

I waited 6 weeks all 3 times. I was able to, so didn't take the risk (I would have a bit earlier if I didn't have a choice). There's 2 main risks: one to your body/recovery if you have to break hard. But the worse risk is having an accident. If you can't confidently, firmly do an emergency stop, then you aren't a safe road user. To the pp who said try not to break hard - what if the car in front of you stops dead? What if a child walks out in front of you? And absolute bollocks is it ever safe to drive yourself home from hospital after a csection 🙄

Six weeks. Meant I had to walk everywhere which was good for me (couldn't stand being at home all day). Wish I had a tracker then I walked mikes!

I was 2 weeks and felt fine. Out of necessity as much as anything. I rang my insurers and they said the six weeks was not mandatory and that I would be covered however should feel confident that I could do an emergency stop if necessary. For comfort you may wish to put a small cushion or pad between you and the lapbelt.
