Thought I was being super organised and already bought outfits but school now tells us it’s a fairytale theme! I’m rummaging though and found an Elsa costume which may fit DD, would this be classified as fairytale? Or is it more Cinderella etc.

Frozen is based on The Snow Queen which is a fairytale so I think it’s fine! Bit annoying of the school to specify a theme.

Thank you!

A) it's fine and B) they can't insist on a theme. They'll just end up with all the girls in Disney princess outfits anyway. If your children already had a more original idea from a book they like then go with that rather than the fairytale thing. The theme is books, not fairytales specifically.

TheKeatingFive · 04/03/2024 08:44

The Snow Queen is a fairytale - you're good

Wingslikeabird · 04/03/2024 08:44

Just complain to the school in writing. They can't tell you it's a fairytale theme specifically, and they certainly can't tell you that with less than a week to go!

Send your daughter in whatever non-uniform she wants to wear with instructions to say she's Miss HelpWBD from the well known fairytale Once Upon A Time I Wore This Outfit.

Our school does any book character OR comfy clothes to lounge and read in. There should be no pressure on parents (or children) to accommodate something so limited, have they not heard there's a cost of living crisis going on!?

Whinge · 04/03/2024 08:45

An Elsa costume is fine. She will be in good company as I suspect most children will be dressed as Disney princess or a superhero.

HelpWBD · 04/03/2024 08:47

Thank you all! Is tinker bell appropriate too? I just found a tutu that kind of looks like tinker bells outfit!

Don't worry about it being appropriate, any outfit is fine. Superhero, fancy dress, own clothes, school uniform. Honestly, the school don't care, and they won't turn her away at the door Grin

If it's what your child wants to wear then it's appropriate. Same as whatever you were already planning to send her in is appropriate. Seriously, don't give it any more headsapce.

YireosDodeAver · 04/03/2024 08:58

My prime rule for WBD is not to spend any money on costumes. Any spare money can go on books! Costume options limited to what you have in the house (or occasional exceptions if its something you'd wear lots eg one WBD I did buy DC some new pyjamas that matched the PJs in a book illustration). There's plenty of people who wear perfectly ordinary clothes in fairy tales but I agree it's crap of the school to announce something like this at short notice.

SoLuckyToHaveYou · 04/03/2024 09:55

Count yourself, lucky. Our school wants all the children dressed up as adjectives for WBD 🤬

WooYa · 04/03/2024 09:57

Send her in whatever she wants. DSs school have a theme but I'm not going out and buying something that he will potentially wear once (has ASD/sensory issues) so he's going in a dinosaur onesie - he's so excited that he can go to school in his pjs!

I’d be using a few well chosen adjectives to tell the school what I thought of their idea.

Exactly. This is what our school does too. Kids can go in PJ's for "bedtime reading". We are in Wales so we dressed up for St David's Day last week, the school said for kids to go in Welsh dress or red, white or green clothes for the Welsh flag or black or yellow clothes for St David's flag. Made it as easy as possible for everyone. Especially when their school uniform red, white and black 😂

I quite like this! Wear blue trousers and a blue shirt and you are ‘blue’. Blue hairspray or face paint as extras. Or spots and ‘spotty’ is your adjective. It’s very open rather than trying to match something.
