To think what I eat in a day is ok?

Bibblybumblebee · 04/03/2024 06:42

So I’m overweight and yes I’d like to loose some weight but I honestly don’t think my diet is that bad. I tend to eat the same most days

Breakfast
25g granola or oats
Low fat Greek yogurt
Berries
Honey

Snack
Banana / apple

Lunch
Beans/egg on whole meal toast
(Small amount of real butter)

Snack
Kit kat and a cuppa

Dinner
Jacket Potato cheese/beans
or
Sausage and mash/roast potatoes with veg

We only ever have a takeaway if it’s someone’s birthday

and we only have a pudding on a Saturday night which will be something like ice cream or cheese cake

In a size 16/18 and I do have PCOS

It might not be the healthiest but also it’s not horrendous surely?

A really easy swap is a supermarket fresh soup for lunch, they're pretty filling but not huge calories. It will reduce carbs and calories.

GreyCarpet · 04/03/2024 08:34

Or make your own soup!

A couple of roasted red peppers, a couple of shallots (lower carb than onions), a couple of cloves of garlic and a jar of passata. Add some smoked paprika if you like. Really simple, enough for a couple of days and delicious.

Meadowfinch · 04/03/2024 08:34

OP, one thing. Why do you say you are overweight? Size 16 is not necessarily overweight for a 6' lady. What is your BMI?

Then a couple of suggestions.

I eat porridge made with water, and with a chopped apple or pear thrown in. Then you don't need the honey, and you can't tell it isn't made with milk.

To drink, I add a slice of lemon to hot water, which gives it a bit of flavour while the warmth is comforting.

Agree with others, I also have PCOS and generally feel much better and less hungry on a higher protein diet. If you won't eat meat, more peas, beans, lentils, eggs, tofu. And for general health, more veg over all.

Finally more exercise will help push your metabolic rate up. Can you add a weekly swim or spin class?

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 04/03/2024 08:35

Roast salmon with braised red cabbage or roast vegetables is good for an evening meal. You don't really need potato.

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 04/03/2024 08:40

I agree, batch cooking veg soup can be a great choice for lunches, or buying a nice ready made one, they come in at less than 300 calories per portion, and can get you a good mix of veg.

What do you do all day? WFH or SAHM? And how many steps is the school run? Some more exercise would help, even just trying to beat your PB for the walks to school would be a start.

16 stone and 6 foot is obese by standard BMI measures. Because the BMI calculation is simplified for ease of calculation it's a bit harsh on taller people and generous on smaller people but it's not going to be a healthy weight whatever. The OP might want to double check with a waist to height ratio check, but with PCOS that's unlikely to be great.

Ohhbaby · 04/03/2024 08:56

Remember the baked beans are also full of sugar.
I'd say there's a massive gaping hole where the protein should be.
Protein is satiating.
I could eat 3 jacket potatoes and beans and I'm tiny, because it isn't satiating .
Up the protein would be my advice as well as don't eat late at night. Dinner at 6 or 7pm. You're just sleeping with that meal, not using it .
Good luck

5128gap · 04/03/2024 08:56

The actual food you're consuming is fine, and I'd really not worry about carbs. They are not your enemy. They may cause bloating in some people, but otherwise are an important part of nutrition, filling you up and giving you energy for your day to day. Carby foods also contain other nutrients and many, like bread, are also a source of protein. I'm 54 with a BMI of 21 and eat plenty of them, just the good ones from plants rather than processed ones with low nutrition. You will lose weight through a calorie deficit so you need to use a calculator to find out how much a woman of your age, size and lifestyle needs to maintain their weight, then eat fewer. Don't guess at first as it's surprising how many calories are in healthy foods like all the fruit you eat.

midgetastic · 04/03/2024 08:57

Beans are protein and with a small amount of butter are complete proteins with all amenities acids covered

There can be a lot of sugar in canned beans as opposed to home made though

Mummyofbananas · 04/03/2024 08:57

My friend has PCOS and she has to be very careful what excercise she does- more focus on weights/walking rather than heavy cardio etc- due to cortisol I think?

Your diet sounds ok, I'd lose weight eating that and i'm only 5'2 (i'm also a bit overweight just now) but I think more protein/lower carb is the way to go.

90 calories for a cup of tea?! Surely that is with a huge amount of sugar and milk added?

It has to be. There’s 2 calories in a cup of black tea, 6 with an average amount of milk. That tea must have around 5 sugars in!

Smelliest · 04/03/2024 09:00

OP, don’t estimate calorie dense foods like cheese until you’ve been carefully weighing and logging all your portions for a few weeks at least.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 04/03/2024 09:00

I'd say there's a massive gaping hole where the protein should be

A tin of beans has 20g of protein, so that's just under half of her daily intake. Yoghurt, cheese and eggs also have good amounts of protein, as do the sausages.

I think she's a size 16 rather than 16 stone? Not necessarily that big for someone so tall, especially if she's hourglass shaped or hippy etc?
I'm very short and not overweight at a size 12, just wide hip bones.

OP doesn't weigh 16 stone - she says she's a size 16.

Oh blimey I'm an idiot! Shows me that I shouldn't try and post before my third coffee.

Louise0808 · 04/03/2024 09:16

You have pcos so losing and maintaining a weight is going to be more difficult. I'd concentrate on high fibre, low sugar foods. Limit carbs and processed foods. Exercise alot more, nothing grand like 4 workouts at a gym etc but try to reach 8,000 steps a day. Most of the women in my family have pcos and have all struggled with weight. It's not an easy battle but if you're determined you can do it.

Moltenpink · 04/03/2024 09:17

BurntOrangeAutumn · 04/03/2024 07:56

If you're 6ft & a size 16/18 you'll look in proportion surely? You mustn't be much overweight?

I was going to say this. I’m the same height and a size 14 at my thinnest, 16 on average and I’m top end of the heathy BMI range

Bibblybumblebee · 04/03/2024 09:21

BirdsofPrey1 · 04/03/2024 07:42

it's not great. Loads of sugary stuff, loads of carbs. Is there nothing fresh (apart from the banana and berries)? No veg, just potatoes and bread. Nobody needs a chocolate bar every day especially not when trying to lose weight. make that a weekly treat.

sausage is just processed crap. Why not a proper piece of meat instead (steak, chicken). I would definitely include a lot more veg, reduce bread, cheese and potatoes, include olive oil instead.

I’m vegetarian so the sausages are Quorn

At about 3pm I’m always craving something sweet. I used to have a cuppa and biscuits - honestly about 6 digestives or sometimes cake. I thought a Kit Kat wouldn’t be too bad at 107 cals

I always seem to crave chocolate every day

I’m very top heavy. PCOS belly and big boobs

So I’m a 16 bottom and 18 top

I had to buy a 20 shirt the other day just for a looser fit around my bust.

Get rid of the honey on your breakfast . Replace the granola with the apple and banana you usually have for a morning snack -ditch the snacks completely so you have just 3 melas a day - feeling hungry between meals isn’t a bad thing it’s when you will burn fat and lose weight.

Thanks this is a really good idea - I always thought granola was healthy 🤦🏻‍♀️

Everyone is so
helpful. I know I’ve been going wrong so I can start making small swaps

Quoen sausages granola baked beans ( tinned ?) Kit Kat ordinary shop bread ?

I wonder if it's too much processed food also ?

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 09:28

I am vegetarian. But if you are, why not actually eat more vegetables or pulses? Once a day for dinner, once in a while, would not be enough for me.

That would be a pretty awful diet by my standards. Way too much sugar, processed food and not enough veg. I am not a competitive under eater.

Vegetarians don’t eat fish, so this isn’t going to help OP.

For portion size, try the hand portion size method - there’s loads online about it. Helps you easily determine how much to eat without weighing.

Low carb, high protein is the way forward. Switch low fat yoghurt for full fat (lower carb), make your own beans (less sugar than tinned) and cut out starchy carbs like potatoes and bread.

As you’re vegetarian, you should be looking to beans, lentils, soya etc for your protein. If you want to eat an entire tin of something, make it a tin of chickpeas or cannoli beans.

Have lots of healthy, low carb, high protein snacks ready so when you feel hungry you don’t grab the nearest carb.

It’ll be tough for about 10 days, then you won’t miss them at all. If you’re serious about losing weight, no chocolate, booze or fizzy drinks.

For me, weight loss is all about diet - I can do 3 or 4 intense gym sessions a week weight training and doing cardio, but if I’m eating badly, I stay fat. That said, you do need to do some exercise otherwise you’re at risk from other medical issues.

Helpful - thank you
