I haven't paid tax since 2004.

However, I will have to start now because I have upped my hours.

Humph

My tax return takes me 5 mons to do each year. Tis greatr

CaptainUnderpants · 25/03/2008 18:51

No tax returns to worry about - no fuming about where my tax goes each month - what a life eh ?

brimfull · 25/03/2008 18:57

well I'm supremely pee'ed off that I have to pay 20% now on my measly wages.

Quattrocento · 25/03/2008 18:58

seb1 · 25/03/2008 18:59

Xenia will be along in five minutes to tell you that you are not aiming high enough.

CaptainUnderpants · 25/03/2008 19:08

When I started this part time job - inland revenue got their knickers ina twist and taxed me at 22% ! wasn't worth me getting out of bed for the money I took home that month .

Got it back about 3 months later .

Aiming high enough ? Have worked and paid tax since I was 18 , have had one career now on career number 2 .

Have a decent pension coming to me from career no 1 and now work during school time only with school holidays off .

Dont claim any benefits , never had done - I think my sights are set quite firmly where they are [ grin]

CaptainUnderpants · 25/03/2008 19:15

I am so very lucky - I work a 16 hr week , no pressure and get to spend all my spare time with DC

Not worrying about how my hard earned wages are being spent by Labour Government is such a relief .!

lol

I am in this bracket too

This year I had to pay 82 quid, which I think is a bargain considering that I get the NHS and schooling for such a tiny sum....

arthursmum · 25/03/2008 19:46

I am a fairly new MNer and got really unnerved by the 'I pay £6000 tax a month' thread as I feared I was totally out of my league. I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have found this thread!! I am not alone! I work 3 x 10 hour shifts a week, for what I think is an alright wage. We can pay our mortgage and occasionally shop in Waitrose if we want, but more importantly I love my job, and know I am doing something worthwhile which is making a difference to people's lives. Still wish I paid less tax though...

ScoobyDoo · 25/03/2008 19:52

What is not enough? i am starting work part-time i wonder if i will be taxed, have not worked for 5 years.....

CountessDracula · 25/03/2008 19:56

Lucky really that wotsherface is paying her £6k a month then...
Otherwise who would pay for the schools & the nhs?

zippitippitoes · 25/03/2008 19:57

Scooby - the threshold is about 5500 - not sure of the eact figure but you will find it on a webiste somewhere- over that and up to another limit you will pay 10 % then it goes up etc etc

Arthursmum - some of us here on Mumsnet are human

Scooby -here's the current tax rates from the HMRC website. For the tax year ending 5 April 2008 the tax free allowance is £5,225

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/03/2008 21:02

I don't pay either CaptainUnderpants We seem very similar - packed up my previous career of 20 years where I paid lot of tax thank you very much and worked long hours. Now work school hours term time. Tis fab and good heavens my youngest is 14!

I chose to do this. Certain people seem to think that makes me less than clever.

arthursmum · 25/03/2008 21:10

Thanks for the kind words - I get the feeling some people just like starting a ruck every now and then!
