For thinking reasons for deleting threads are inconsistent

How come threads can be deleted just because the op doesn’t like the answers?

I had a thread that resulted in a pile on, was potentially identifying AND got picked up by the Mirror and MN still wouldn’t delete it!!

Ive just seen a thread deleted where an op asked about a school issue, not identifying, trivial issue, OP was told she was o er reacting, never came back and now the thread had gone! If she was a troll please let us know, otherwise it seems that MN deliberately keeps the threads that end up in the press despite upsetting users.

YANBU. Their moderating policy is bizarre.

Meadowbird · 02/03/2024 09:00

The deleted thread has this message “Hi and thanks for all the replies to this. The OP is very grateful but they have asked us to take it down now and we have agreed.
MNHQ”.
No reason at all! How come I asked and was refused?

YANBU
I saw that thread deletion too.
I once had a thread I started about a workplace money collection for a gift etc and it got quite a few replies then someone said “watch out OP, the Daily Mail will be after this one”. I got spooked because while the risk is lower (although never zero) of someone recognising the situation on mumsnet, if it gets reproduced on the Daily Mail site the audience gets wider so I reported my own thread and asked mumsnet to take it down due to privacy concerns. They replied saying they would not take it down as it did not break any of their posting rules and their advice was to stop posting on it and then others would also stop and eventually lose interest and the thread would drop down and off the active boards!
So when I see deleted threads (fairly often) like the one you refer to where OP had asked a school related question and been told she was unreasonable, then mumsnet have deleted and the reason given is the OP asked for it to be deleted/privacy concerns etc I do wonder why they wouldn’t do the same for me!

People get them taken down for anything now - ‘we can see this thread isn’t helping anyone so we’ve taken it down’ - aka - OP didn’t like the replies so wanted it taken down.

Meadowbird · 02/03/2024 09:08

My thread caused me genuine and real distress and worry - and it’s still here somewhere!

I think they should be taken down if they end up in the press or if the OP is found to be a troll.

Otherwise I think they should be left to stand.

YANBU. It's all over the place. My pet peeve is threads (on innocuous topics, not the serious stuff) taken down just because the OP didn't like the replies. Or when they get picked up by a tabloid, as if they were somehow private when on this massive site before. Does my head in.

JJathome · 02/03/2024 09:22

I was surprised that was removed as well. It does read like the op didn’t like the answers so wanted it deleted. I’m not sure I agree that’s on.

Everything on the internet is public

I think all threads should be deletable by the OP themselves

The idea that posters are invested in the thread and spent time replying blahblah and deleting is unfair to the is simply ludicrous

If ppl choose to use their time on a thread it is their choice and not complulsary - if they have time to waste, let them

Also no one should be that ‘invested’ - get a life!
