How many only children are there in your DCs class?

DD5 is an only child. For a while we were happy with one but for a year have been TTC#2 with no luck and I'm feeling extra rubbish about it tonight because her best friend at school (who was an only) has just told us she is to become a big sister. I feel so bad for DD.

Somehow it didn't seem so bad when her friend was in the same situation and I'm feeling terrible tonight. I'm 38 and wondering if it will ever happen.

I don't want DD to feel like the odd one out and I'm worried she already does. In her class there are 28 children, 8 are only children and 20 have siblings. What's the ratio at your school?

There is 1 only child in elder DC class (class of 30). I know this because many children have siblings in younger DC class.

I actually don't think there are any only children in younger DC class (29 kids). There was one but they moved.

In ds’s class 2 out of 23, in dd’s 1 out of 25. In ds’s class almost all of them were the older/est sibling in their family and in dd’s almost all of them were the youngest.

Never counted as it was irrelevant. ds had plenty of friends that also had no siblings and also ones that did.

It is fairly common not to have siblings and not exactly a significant hardship compared to real troubles some children have.

you are making this into some big trauma for your dd and it really isnt.

Wonder how you know ? Unless you ask everyone seems strange .I am an only child as is DIL and my good friend as well .I think your DD just heard her friends to become a big Sister ,thinks it sounds good and would like the same.I expect she will want a Puppy next week! Please dont worry we have all turned out OK (I think!)

Because my kid is in y5 and everyone has been talking at the school gates, at school plays, assemblies, fairs, school parties, play dates for years and years at this point. You'd have to be particularly anti-social to have no idea who did and didn't have siblings.

Its brought up at least annually in the classroom when they are being taught the various types of graphs. Along with the number of rooms in their houses, hair colour and for some odd reason whether they have/haven't solar panels! (so I know quite a lot of useless information about the kids in the classroom :) )
