Would you test for COVID?

DD, 8 has been unwell since yesterday - high temperature and cough but no other cold/flu symptoms and tonsils, back of throat etc, are absolutely fine too.

I know it’s not the norm to test for COVID anymore but she attends an SEN school where some children are vulnerable and we have a lot of older people within the immediate family that we see quite regularly.

AIBU to test her for it?

I would because I have tests. I'm not sure I would go out and buy them. I'd keep away from school or elderly relatives is she was ill anyway 🤷‍♀️

SpringLobelia · 01/03/2024 17:34

yes definitely in this situation.

I tested all of us a few weeks ago because I was mildy ill. Covid me and DH. Thing is- DS1 is medically extremely vulnerable (although he never tested positive in the end) and I know he has an extremely vulnerable teacher who is very badly affected by long covid.

If I had an inkling I would always test.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/03/2024 17:34

Nope, I’d keep her away from others until she’s free from symptoms though.

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 01/03/2024 17:34

Yes

Londonrach1 · 01/03/2024 17:34

A lot of the older tests don't show positive for the new strains. Id keep her away from vulnerable children and elderly relatives as you would do with a cold flu or sickness bug. Hope she better soon
And no I've not answered the question.

WhateverMate · 01/03/2024 17:36

Do the staff have to go in with Covid?

If so then no I wouldn't test.

What does school say?
My son also attends a SEN school with extremely medically vulnerable students his school only say to test if you want to and pupils can come into school as long as they are well enough.

Ponderingwindow · 01/03/2024 17:44

Yes I would.
we have a vulnerable family member in our household. When our dd got a bad cold, we tested her, discovered it was actually covid, and called her doctor and his doctor. We had to follow some extreme protocols, but no one else in the family got Covid.

if you know your child spends time with people who are vulnerable, the morally right thing to do is test.

ChickpeaPie · 01/03/2024 17:46

No, because it shouldn’t make a difference if it’s covid or not. If she’s ill, keep her away from vulnerable people.

Catopia · 01/03/2024 18:06

I would test personally, but in some ways don't think it matters greatly - covid or cold needs to stay away from medically vulnerable people until is no longer symptomatic.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 01/03/2024 21:37

I will test until the tests we have are used up but I don’t think I will be buying more unless it becomes required (legally or socially) again.

Maddy70 · 01/03/2024 21:43

Yes i would in that situation. I am immunosuppressed. I am very grateful to those who are considerate enough not to endanger my life

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 01/03/2024 21:45

No I wouldn’t but I would keep him off until he was 24hrs clear of symptoms x

TheGoodOldOne · 01/03/2024 22:04

To be completely honest my household has been hit with some awful bugs way worse for us than COVID recently and no idea where they originated from. I wish anyone who feels poorly would stay away until they were symptom free whether they think it’s COVID or not, but I do appreciate that isn’t always possible and some people don’t receive sick pay etc. so not that straightforward.

idontlikealdi · 01/03/2024 22:33

No

Lifebeganat50 · 01/03/2024 22:39

No, if she’s unwell she shouldn’t be among other people anyway, it doesn’t matter what flavour of bug she has

mollyfolk · 01/03/2024 22:46

I don’t test the kids for covid anymore. I just feel like it’s not fair on them and they got loads of tests over the pandemic. Your child might have the flu which is also dangerous for some - or RSV which can be dangerous for babies. Or even strep A . I would just keep them home from school until they are well.

PeloMom · 01/03/2024 22:48

I would but would wait a couple of more days as it takes time to show. Otherwise you may get a false negative

SoOutingWhoCares · 01/03/2024 22:57

I would test, yes.

I’ve recently been life threateningly ill with Covid and there may be permanent damage to my health meaning I’ll no longer be able to work. I caught it from 3 colleagues who had symptoms for several days but only tested a few days late after exposing us all and so it ended up going round the whole office. We would have been allowed to wfh and it’s upsetting that it was avoidable. My whole life has changed. I was in my 30s with no underlying health concerns and had all my vaccines.

If there’s any risk of harming vulnerable classmates and relatives, please don’t take it. Also be aware that it takes around 5 days to get a positive test now. I had symptoms for 3 days before I got a positive test.

This underlines why testing is pointless, because people can be walking around infectious and spreading.

Much of the circus surrounding the pandemic was pointless and counter productive, but speaking as a scientist, what I find sad is that we haven't learned as a society that the best way to limit the spread of all respiratory infections is to stay home if you are ill.

Cases such as yours underline the need to be cautious about catching Covid, because long covid is a real risk, and an unknown quantity.
