They'd do better at asking for market rent, but then mentioning babysitting work (paid) is available.

That would cost the landlord/employer more though - which is exactly why they want to exploit someone this way instead. They say it's 3 hours babysitting a weekday, so assuming it's a 20 weekday month that's 60 hours. At £11.44 an hour (minimum wage from April) that's £686.40, so they are charging, in cash and labour, £1086.40 a month for a single (pretty crappy looking) room as lodger in a family house and as a Monday to Friday let. Even in Clapham that isn't market rent.

It’s not cheap when you add in the 15 hours a week work. And the fact you have to find somewhere else to sleep for two nights!

Don't forget it's 15 hours unpaid childcare!

I did know someone who about 15 years or so ago had au pairs in her house in Battersea. They had a lovely attic room (huge) with separate bathroom there. My friend and her DH worked hard and longer hours. But they always, always paid the au pair (they had 3 DC) and had some very good ones at that, not always foreign ones some British.
