New tourist tax in Greece… another example of unfair tax

€1.50 per room for 1 and 2 star hotels
€10 per room for 5 star…

WTF.

tourist tax = fine, absolutely on board with, help to fund climate change etc etc…

but why not make it flat across the board… ye again the ones that aren’t rich, work hard, can afford nice things if they save are the ones that are penalised the most

surely climate change is everyone’s equal responsibility?

Wait til you find out French cities and towns set their own rates of taxe de sejour

CarrotOfPeace · 29/02/2024 21:43

If it's a problem you don't have to go.

Last year we were looking at the prices of some of the incredibly fancy places we saw in Greece.. the most outrageous one we looked at was €7,500 per night and the listed the tourist tax separately.... which did give us a laugh.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/03/2024 12:37

It's generally because you have to pay it separately. I have often had to pay tourist tax in cash to the receptionist or flat owner on the day I arrive.

It's been a thing in Italy and Spain for many years too. In Sorrento and Rome and I beleive will be the case in Sicily when we go in June, it's strictly paid in cash only.

I'm a bit cynical that it actually goes anywhere official to do any form of social good ... Confused

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/03/2024 12:55

To be fair, as it's per adult per night (15 is classed as adult in Italy for this purpose) it does soon add up ...

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/03/2024 13:01

Yes, the "cash preferred" often gives me a wry smile, as does the reaction if a receipt's requested

Don't get me wrong, I adore Greece and go a lot, but there's no denying the culture of tax being regarded as optional - though we're hardly blameless in the UK either

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/03/2024 14:16

They are also very insistent it is paid asap unlike the hotel bill. Which I find a bit odd.

It's not per adult per night in Greece, it's per room per night.

Ahh ok

In Italy it is per person per night so a general observation that for a family it does start to add up and increase the holiday cost overall
